Surrender to the Flow: Phish Fanzine created by Christy Articola

If you have been on Phish Tour for even a short amount of time, or only got into Phish since 2003 or later, you undoubtedly seen seen or picked up a copy of Surrender to the Flow. Created by Christy Articola from Albany, NY, Surrender to the Flow was first conceptualized on the drive from Deer Creek to Atlanta in the summer of 1998.  Ideas came forth rapidly and immediately after returning home after the Lemonwheel, work was begun on our first issue.  The very first copies of Surrender to the Flow were distributed at Halloween in Vegas and on the rest of Fall Tour 1998, and the touring public welcomed the first edition with open arms.  The rest, as they say, is history.

Surrender grew quickly; the first issue and second issues were merely photocopied and had a small circulation of a mere 250 copies per issue.  However, by the third issue, Summer 1999, Surrender had taken a giant step.  That tour saw our first professionally printed issue- this time a run of 3,000 copies- and was also our first issue to use entirely fan-drawn artwork.    More than ninety percent of all artwork in that and all future issues of Surrender was drawn by our Senior Artist, Drew Suto.

Our publication aimed not only to inform fans of vital tour information such as directions, hotels, grocery stores, and the like, but attempted to capture the magic of Phish and Phish tour on paper.  In addition to being a travel guide, Surrender included reviews of shows by Phish and by other bands, environmental and political articles, tour humor, statistics, news, games, and life philosophies.

By the end of Surrender, and the end of Phish in 2004, 18 issues were created with a circulation of 7,000 copies per tour.  Christy’s creation is undoubtedly the only and greatest fan magazine created for and by Phish fans.  Each issue is planned out meticulously and with a broad scope in mind for Phish fans to enjoy during set break or on the road to the next show, or a few weeks later when the issue surfaces from the post-tour spring cleaning

Surrender will have issues out this Halloween (see below), as well as for Fall Tour and the heavily rumored New Years in Miami (can we announce this yet?)

That Christy is smoking. Donny Smalls knows how to spot ‘em. Her publishing skills are out of site.
