Watkins Glen and SPAC posters from Jeff Lucas

Welcome new artist Jeff Lucas to PhanArt! In his own words:

“I have been a screen printer for 35 years. I started out in my teens selling t-shirts and bumper stickers at Dead shows. Then on August 9th 1995 myself and a whole lot of other people were out of a job. I setteled down got married had kids and put my engineering background to work. I slowly drifted back into screen printing and for the last 20 years I have been at the helm of Black Dog Graphics Inc. in Clinton, Maine. For the most part we are a contract t-shirt printer serving regional and national accounts. However a couple of time a year when the shop is empty I turn my skills to flat stock and do up a poster or two and head to the lot. This year it was SPAC, last year it was Watkins Glen and The Gorge. Why? Because I am part of the show and it gives me a reason to talk with a few hundred people i wouldn’t normally talk to.”

“I use a traditional approach in my print making to protect the edition. All screens, master flats and art files are erased or destroyed after the run.  I keep a low quality .png file for presence on the internet,  once the edition is sold out it to will be erased.   There will never be a second edition. There are no rejects or artist proofs and no editing in terms of quality,  in print making there are no “mistakes” there is only markings that make a print individual. I will sell out an edition to it’s entirety.”

“I prefer the circus theme for my concert posters because in 2013 a weekend with Phish and the crowd in tow is as close to the old time circus as we are going to get. My show circus posters are an innocent anecdote to other work work I see.”
