A new design from SetList Tees, their first of 2013!

“We figured what better way to celebrate the new year then by paying tribute to the showmanship exhibited by the boys on the last night of last year. The design features a golfer in familiar garb driving a golf ball filled with the night’s festivities into the future. As with all of our shirts, the artwork will appear on the front of the shirt and the setlist from the night will appear on the back.”

NYE at MSG Print by: Tim Kelly

Tim Kelly has created a poster for this 2012-2013 run at Madison Square Garden. The concept came from the idea of the fans taking over the city for four days. Last year, everywhere he went around the city he would see people going to the show, and he met a lot of cool people because of it!

No Dogs Allowed: Phish MSG New Years Print by Franky Scaglione

It’s that time of year again… Phish in New York City for the holidays just seems to make sense, and heading back to the East Coast jibes nicely. 2012 has been a great year, and I’m excited to ring in the next in classic fashion… back in NYC at Madison Square Garden!
NoDogsAllowed
Living in The City this past summer, I took nearly every train in every direction, and became fascinated with the infrastructure. I knew I wanted to do a print highlighting the magic of the NYC underground… and, naturally, No Dogs Allowed came to mind. Borrowing the theme from Trey’s playful lyrics, “there wouldn’t be room for the people at all; the trains would be cluttered with dogs big and small,” I wanted to illustrate all of our favourite dogs of Phish fame: McGrupp (the fleahound), Shaggy Dog (the puli), Runaway Jim (the greyhound), Harpua (the bulldog), and even Poster Nutbag (the cat).

No Dogs Allowed is a limited edition screen print run of 150 on archival 100lb French Poptone black paper (24″ x 18″), all signed and numbered. Please contact me if you are interested in pre-ordering a print… I’ll take requests for numbers on a first come-first serve basis, and will ship pre-orders BEFORE I leave for New York (until December 23). Orders placed after December 23 will ship on January 3. Price is $25 plus $10 shipping/handling, in a reinforced postertube, etc. to anywhere in the US/Canada. As always, all subscribers (who have purchased at least four consecutive prints) will be receiving free shipping (and of course, you’ll receive the same number print that you’ve gotten in the past); just remind me when you send payment. For anyone that would like to become a subscriber, I am happy to reserve the same print number for you (as long as it’s still available) and guarantee you free shipping for every print after four purchased. Please just let me know…

Edition of 150
100lb French Poptone black paper
24″ x 18″
Inks: red, white, METALLIC silver
$25

Oh, and I just have to ask… can anyone help me out tracking down a ticket? I have all the tickets I need for the holiday run, EXCEPT one ticket for NYE. I have an extra for December 30, and I am willing to trade it (plus throw in an extra $20 and a print) for your extra December 31. Thanks so much for keeping me in mind!

Holiday Best,
Franky.

Warning about Vending outside MSG this New Years Run

We posted this last year as a heads up to Phish fans who might be selling posters, shirts, stickers, pins or other items outside of MSG. Read on for a true life story from the NYE 2010 run and avoid getting arrested this New Years Run!

Woke Up This Morning…

NYC Tax Evasion

One Way To Avoid Jail If You Plan On Vending This NYE run

by Uncle Ebeneezer

If you enjoyed the Makisupa on 1/1/11, you’re welcome.  I got arrested before the show that day for selling artwork on the first poster I sold that day.  I was arrested with another phan who was selling pins (really awesome pins too).  Why?  Neither of us had a tax id. After selling a poster in front of the venue before doors opened, I was approached by a police officer and before I knew it, was in cuffs. I was searched and placed with a vendor who was selling pins. There was a semi-circle of 5 cops around us, as if we were active threats to public safety.  After a half hour, we were loaded into a paddy wagon and driven to a station to be booked. We were hassled and we were mocked at the station for being phans, we were threatened and insulted, we had our shoelaces, belts and strings from our hoodies removed, we were fingerprinted and photographed…all for selling posters and pins.   Luckily we made it out (with a ticket to appear in a New York City court in February) and inside the venue without missing any music, but I don’t recommend the experience to anyone.

This poster was the case

Following the steps below could have saved me from a major bummer of an experience. Be safe if you’re vending in NYC this year. Let’s face it, with all that is going on down on Wall Street, NYPD are going to be extra anxious to crack a few heads this year.  Don’t be that head. I made it out of the precinct and inside MSG without missing any music, but I don’t recommend it to anyone. The City of New York requires all vendors including artists and written matter vendors to have a sales tax ID and carry it with them while vending.

To apply for a NY State Tax ID
Go to: http://www.nystax.gov/forms/sales_cur_forms.htm
Use form # DTF-17 (Fill-in)

Then click Certificate of Authority to Collect Sales Tax

Don’t be that head.

The need for a vending permit to sell anything in NYC was brought to our attention. According to this link, a vending permit is not needed for specific things:

LICENSE DESCRIPTION:

You must have a General Vendor license if you sell, lease, or offer to sell or lease goods or services in a public place.

You do NOT need a General Vendor license if:

  • You sell newspapers, periodicals, books, pamphlets, or other written matter.
  • You sell artwork, including paintings, photographs, prints, and sculptures.
  • You sell food. Note: Food vending requires a license from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Call 311 or visit www.nyc.gov/health for information about food cart vendor licenses and permits.
  • You will only sell merchandise from a booth or stand at an authorized Street Fair (e.g., street fair, block party, or festival). Please note that you must obtain a Temporary Street Fair Vendor Permit to sell merchandise at an authorized Street Fair.
Phish fans could go so far as to argue that pins, shirts, etc… are artwork, and rightly so. PhanArt believes that anything that can be construed as taking a creative effort to design qualifies as art. This would not include food and other things that are more disposable, but this of course is up to the officer in question who approaches you. Be careful and if they ask you to stop selling, do so. It is artwork but is it worth going to jail for? More specifically, is it worth going to jail and missing Phish?

Disclaimer: While this information is a step to avoid problems from the police, it cannot prevent them from acting in their own judgment and arresting you for this or other offenses. PhanArt is offering this up as a potential to avoid arrest or harassment for vending in and around MSG. This is not iron clad and should not be treated as so. If you do take this advice, please remember to pay your taxes on the works you collect – both City of New York and State of New York taxes.

Where do YOU go when the lights go out?

AJ Masthay Releases NYE print series ‘The Terminal’

Hello World! Coming to you semi-live from lovely West Hartford, CT. It’s been an interesting fall to say the least, what with a hurricane and Nor-easter in a weeks time… We were very lucky in central CT with nothing more than a cable outage and a few inches of snow to deal with, but our hearts go out to the millions along the coast who are still recovering from Sandy. Stay strong NYC & Jersey!

Okay, so I’m writing to you to let you know about my upcoming prints for the 4 nights at MSG for the New Years run. Yup, it’s a Quad and what a Quad it is! Keeping with what is now a Masthay Studios tradition, I am releasing the images of the sketches early and will be Tweeting/Facebooking the entire printing process in full graphic detail so those of you that purchase can follow along and literally watch you prints being made. If you haven’t done so already, be sure to “Like” Masthay Studios on facebook, www.facebook.com/masthaystudios, and follow us on Twitter, twitter.com/ajmasthay as Ill be posting different content to each. So, with all that said, I humbly present “The Terminal”…

Again, the image above is the preliminary pastel sketch and you can follow the progression of the actual prints on our social media outlets. All prints are guaranteed to arrive prior to Dec 25th so don’t hesitate to pick one up for the Phanatic on you Xmas list!

Want to learn more about the concept and theme behind this quadtych? I recently sat down with Dave Calarco from Mr. Miner’s Phish Thoughts for a little Q&A about this set and a busy 2012 for Masthay Studios. Check out the interview at PhishThoughts.com.

In other Masthay Studios news, be sure to check out the upcoming Blunt Fink group show being hosted by the wonderful folks at Blunt Graffix in Eugene, OR. It’s shaping up to be an amazing conglomeration of artists, each of which creating a mash up of movie themes in the style of the one and only Big Daddy Ed Roth. I can’t say what my theme is yet, but it involves motorcycles and a twisted trip to Mardi Gras…. Finally, I’ll mention an incredibly exciting collaboration print that Im in the midst of. Stay tuned for more info on this one, but to say that I’m excited is a major understatement.

As always, thank you so much for supporting my work and the arts in general. It’s been an awesome year and the future is shaping up to be incredibly exciting. Stay well and stay safe and I hope to see you in the City this NYE!

Sincerely,

AJ Masthay
