“Summer in Saratoga: A Rock Art Exhibition,” featuring Phish artists from around the country will be held on Saturday July 6th from 10am-3pm at The Saratoga Hilton, in downtown Saratoga Springs, New York. Developed and produced by a group of artists and fans known as the Mothership Art Collective, the art show will be held in the middle of a weekend of Phish, who play just down the road at Saratoga Performing Arts Center, July 5th-7th.

The initial artists announced for “Summer in Saratoga: A Rock Art Exhibition,” represent some of the best artists in the Phish community and poster art. Longtime Phish artists AJ Masthay, TRiPP, John Warner, Ryan Kerrigan, Branden Otto, Edward Wilson, Bruce Horan and Isadora Bullock have been a part of many poster shows in the past and each have a large portfolio of concert poster art across a wide range of musical acts. Erin Cadigan, an artist from Woodstock, NY will be featuring her art, posters and clothing line THREE. Joining the show for the first time is Nate Duval, an official poster artist who has an extensive history of creating unique posters for a number of musical acts. First timers include Bill Pompeii of Pompeii Prints, maker of posters, shirts and various pins that have gained acclaim among Phish fans, and Troy, NY artist Drew Suto, who as Senior Artist for Surrender to the Flow, designs the cover art for the Phish fan magazine handed out for free on lot at every show.

Non-profits include in “Summer in Saratoga: A Rock Art Exhibition”, are The Mockingbird Foundation, which has given grants for music education totaling more than $700,000 over the past 15 years; Screens ‘n’ Suds, which combines craft beers and art to benefit the National MS Society and charities in Richmond, VA and Chicago, IL, raising over $75,000 since 2009; and PhanArt, a book and website created as a way to showcase the art made by Phish fans, raising money for The Mockingbird Foundation through donations from artists and fans, totaling over $10,000 since 2009.

Phish poster shows have been held since 2003 with great success, as unique posters are made for Phish shows during the poster show weekend, making for a must-attend event during Phish tour, featuring some of the most unique concert art being produced today. ‘Summer in Saratoga: A Rock Art Exhibition” is the first event for 2013 produced by the Mothership Art Collective, a group within the Phish community comprised of artists and organizations who promote the art inspired by the band Phish. The eclectic artists featured at this event show the broad scope of Phish related art and capture the inspiration of the band in their art. The creative fan base of Phish makes for amazing art inspired by the band, their music and the locales they play. The Collective will work hard to bring a show to the Phish touring public each year.

In keeping with the great tradition and success of past poster shows, “Summer in Saratoga: A Rock Art Exhibition” will offer free entry to all patrons and tubes available for purchase. Charitable donations from the event will be made to The Mockingbird Foundation, as well as a wide array of artists featuring posters to fit any budget. More artists will be announced in mid-June, as well as special edition works only available at the show, which will be available for viewing shortly thereafter at www.mothershipartcollective.org

Watkins Glen and SPAC posters from Jeff Lucas

Welcome new artist Jeff Lucas to PhanArt! In his own words:

“I have been a screen printer for 35 years. I started out in my teens selling t-shirts and bumper stickers at Dead shows. Then on August 9th 1995 myself and a whole lot of other people were out of a job. I setteled down got married had kids and put my engineering background to work. I slowly drifted back into screen printing and for the last 20 years I have been at the helm of Black Dog Graphics Inc. in Clinton, Maine. For the most part we are a contract t-shirt printer serving regional and national accounts. However a couple of time a year when the shop is empty I turn my skills to flat stock and do up a poster or two and head to the lot. This year it was SPAC, last year it was Watkins Glen and The Gorge. Why? Because I am part of the show and it gives me a reason to talk with a few hundred people i wouldn’t normally talk to.”

“I use a traditional approach in my print making to protect the edition. All screens, master flats and art files are erased or destroyed after the run.  I keep a low quality .png file for presence on the internet,  once the edition is sold out it to will be erased.   There will never be a second edition. There are no rejects or artist proofs and no editing in terms of quality,  in print making there are no “mistakes” there is only markings that make a print individual. I will sell out an edition to it’s entirety.”

“I prefer the circus theme for my concert posters because in 2013 a weekend with Phish and the crowd in tow is as close to the old time circus as we are going to get. My show circus posters are an innocent anecdote to other work work I see.”

Check out Jeff’s site blackdoggraphics.com

What you need to know about Phish at SPAC, including Map and Post-show info

This was originally posted for the June 2010 Phish shows at SPAC. With a few tweaks, some updates and punctuation improvements, here is what you need to know about going to SPAC for Phish over July 6-8, 2012.

This past month, Saratoga officials announced a crackdown on alcohol and intoxicated people in the state park known as SPA, which includes SPAC. In the past, there has always been a lot of chatter preceding the summer concert season at SPAC regarding the increased police presence and no-alcohol policy (with ticket enforcement and arrest potential) and this has led to alot of people wondering ‘So what do we do?’

Well, first things first, follow PhanArt on Twitter for helpful hints will abound throughout the weekend. I’ll be up there all weekend and can share traffic info, park updates and let fans know what is going down with the police presence.

You’ll need this – the map of Saratoga Spa State Park. It is VERY easy to get lost, wind up walking around for an hour looking for the lot your car is in, or altogether become disoriented. Download link: spac map

For those who want to go to the Phish.net meetup and BBQ, it will be held on Saturday, July 7th from Noon-7pm at the Ferndell Pavilion, which you can find highlighted on this map here. Make sure to use the Route 9 to enter. The pavilion is reserved under “Mockingbird”, so if you are a regular on the board or want to meet some of the folks behind Phish.net and The Mockingbird Foundation, that’s the place to go on 7/7.

Things to keep in mind as you venture to SPAC on the 6th, 7th and 8th: DMB played a few weeks ago at SPAC.  The cops were in full force to scare people and limit teen-drunk driving, and drunk driving in general. Take a look at the local coverage and note the fake IDs taken away by cops. Sure, that’s Dave’s crowd, but it wouldn’t be hard to imagine what Phish’s crowd would yield. They seem to be enforcing the ‘absolutely zero tolerance for drinking’ this year, so don’t provoke them. Dave’s fans somehow set a fine example for the summer with NO felonies (a first for them), but let’s show them we are better than DMB fans. Yes, Phish fan exceptionalism exists!

The cops will be looking for drugs more than booze with the older crowd. When you drive in, they will use an alcohol sensor on your car, and if they find any, you’re in for a no good very bad day. If they see you drinking, they’ll dip in a stick detector for alcohol into the drink and then they can search you. Arcane? Yes. Illegal? Possibly. Outlandish and Insane? Indeed. But this is real, this is happening and this isn’t alarmist commentary. This comes from people who have been there and people who work there. Use your heads this year.

Hotels have also been given a contact number to call if they suspect drug use. So be careful when you are pre-gaming at the hotel or getting back and trying to enjoy the post-show scene or get some sleep.

Getting into town early? Fishbone will be playing at The Putnam Den on Thursday!

Post show, there will be checkpoints for drunk driving and K-9 units for the obvious. Don’t leave the park without a sober driver and when you do, drive the speed limit, the cops need only a small reason to pull you over. ________________________________________________________________

Speaking of post shows, there are a couple of Saratoga options for those who want to keep the party going, but are able to get to the shows with a sober driver.

The Putnam Den has fast become the premier live music venue in Saratoga, after SPAC. There are three late night shows, one for each night of Phish, and only TWO miles from SPAC! The address of The Putnam Den is 63A Putnam St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. For more info on each of the shows, visit the Putnam Den website www.putnamden.com

Friday, July 6Wyllys & The New York Hustler Ensemble featuring: Wyllys – Turntables, Jennifer Hartswick (Trey Anastasio Band) – Trumpet/Vocals, Steve Molitz (Particle/Phil Lesh) – Keys, D.V.S. – Guitar, Bryan McNamara (Grippo Funk) – Sax. The Hustler Ensemble is an amazing group of musicians and a kick-ass dance party, as those who went to the post show after 12/31/11 can attest. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online.

Saturday, July 7The WaterWheel Foundation 15-year Anniversary Party w/ Dead Sessions, a GREAT Grateful Dead cover band, featuring Seth Yacavone and has included in the past members of Trey Anastasio Band, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Grippo Funk Band, Turkey Bouillon Mafia, and Liquid Dead. Tickets cost only $10 with $1 from each ticket going to The Waterwheel Foundation. You can buy tickets online here.

Sunday, July 8 – Dopapod - any fans of EDM that still have energy after the show should head here. Dopapod has been killing it lately, headlining smaller festivals and playing the big ones, including Gathering of the Vibes in late July. They put on an amazing show and are uber-talented. This and all shows mentioned are highly recommended. Tickets for Dopapod at only $5, available at the door.

The Parting Glass, 40-42 Lake Avenue, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 will be having post shows on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, June 7th from 11PM – 3AM, The Garcia Project, a JGB cover band will be playing to benefit The Mockingbird Foundation.  Admission is $10 at the door with no advance tickets sales. Mik Bondy, Garcia Project guitarist and other members will be sitting in and leading an “open jam” at the Phish.net meetup picnic Saturday afternoon in the Spa State Park, details of which can be found in the Phish.net forum and blog/news early next week. There will also be a ticket raffle on Friday night for the “Jerry Garcia FISH” batiks with 50% of raffle ticket sales to benefit The Mockingbird Foundation.

On Saturday, local band Formula 5 will perform. This is a very hot local act that has drawn a great following over the last year. The cost is only $5 for Saturday’s post show. You can visit Facebook for more info or their website  partingglasspub.com

See you all at SPAC!

PhanArt’s Best of 2010

2010 has been an amazing year for PhanArt on the lot and on the web. More and more art is being made by a larger number of fans, due to Phish’s return to full touring, more fans looking to share their creativity and the influence of the band in their lives, as well as a way to make it from show A to show B.

While we do not favor any art on the blog above any other art, this is the time of year when we share the Top fan creations of 2010 based on comments, reaction from phans at shows and online, as well as the creativity the artist put into the work. All PhanArt made in the last year has been amazing, and we think the following are some of the best.

This year we have 11, since we are ready to say hello to 2011

#10 Deer Creek Friday the 13th by lotlifestyle.com

These posters were seen briefly online before a last-minute trip out to Deer Creek, and we spotted them after night 1. We picked up a couple for ourselves and the good folks at lotlifestyle.com got in touch with us. Friday the 13th doesnt happen on tour very often so this creative effort is worth noting for its rarity and simplicity

#9 Isadora Bullock Deer Creek

This deer haunts our dreams. Now it haunts yours. Merry Phishmas!

#8 Ryan Kerrigan Broomfield

Brooms in a field. Simple and done well. Classic Kerrigan.

#7 Hartford Whalers/Wilson shirt

Combine the greatest defunct hockey team with Phish and you get this shirt. The weird thing: we never found out who was selling these on tour this summer. If you know who sold them, get them in touch with us!

#6 Bruce Horan’s SPAM SPAC

A street art feel and a play on words leads to a simple print that is anything but simple. Horan’s dedication to the craft is seen in the level of detail in this print.

#5 Eric Weber’s ‘Phreedom’

A great font + the most iconic of NYC images + Phish = Phreedom. An amazing senior project and entry into the world of PhanArt

#4 Brother shirt by UnoClay

Available ONLY on lot, UnoClay went all Nintendoo on us, coming up with a unique shirt (the back has the ? block and says ‘somebody’) that has detail worked into it. For fall he one upped himself – Birds of a Feather and Duck Hunt. Just when you thought shirt ideas were limited to corporate logos, along come games. Who’s making Call of Duty/Kill Devil Falls?

#3 AJ Masthay MSG

Not just one but THREE posters all sharing part of an aquarium. The first poster – the 30th comes on fierce as usual; the second – the 31st shows the ball dropping; the third – the 1st, is serene, as we will all be in recovery mode and asked to dance one more time to start the new year and decade.

#2 Lizzy Layne’s Fuck Your Face

A picture is worth a thousand words. Lizzy’s Holiday Run print has 3 words, so 3 x 1000 = 3000 words. Therefore, this poster is worth 3000 words AND tells you what to do with your face. Appropriate for work, home or the RV heading to the show.

and the #1 piece of PhanArt in 2010 is…………………..

#1 Vinny Naro’s Halloween Poster

Drawing by hand is one thing. Nearly everyone can do that. Drawing in pen and ink in extreme detail, and using nothing else in the process is painstakingly hard and takes a level of commitment that is rarely seen anywhere. Vinny Naro’s Atlantic City print is remarkable in its detail - the three clocks show 10:29, 10:30 and 10:31, respectively. The pipe organ is drawn to resemble the original that is housed in Boardwalk Hall (but in need of repairs, hence not being used that weekend). Satan is playing the pipe organ with his own devilish tune, and the designs throughout exhibit precision towards each facet of his work. Referring to this as a work of art is an understatement. We got this framed right after the shows.

Franky Scaglione SPAC print – The Antelope Stakes

Franky Scaglione is happy to release his work for the two-night run this past month at the legendary Saratoga Performing Art Center. Saratoga Springs is home to the oldest organized sporting venue in the United States (Saratoga Race Course), so he decided to play with the concept of the Travers Stakes… transposing the horse race into an antelope race coming out of SPAC… naturally.

The Antelope Stakes Saratoga Springs 2010 Edition of 150 100lb Cougar 18″ x 24″ 3 colors $25

Antelope Stakes by Franky Scaglione

Phish so graciously validated Franky’s print by playing a killer Antelope on night two!

A message from Franky: “Thanks to all of you, both new supporters and loyal collectors of my art that I ran into these past few weeks; it was great seeing many of you in Glens Falls at the poster art show at the 42 Degrees Gallery too. For those of you that didn’t get a chance to score a print in the lots or the poster show, I saved some here in Denver and I am ready to fill orders now.”

How to order: send Franky an email at paisleyblue@gmail.com with the amount of prints you wish to order (each costs $25 plus S+H) and a shipping address.

For any fans that have purchased all four of Franky’s Phish prints, you will receive free shipping and the same number print that you’ve gotten in the past. Please let Franky know what number you want when you email him.

Phans that would like to become a subscriber to Franky’s prints, email him and let him know. He will continue to reserve the same print numbers for you in future editions, as long as they are still available, as well as free shipping.
