Arnaud Azoulay’s Pen and Ink Portraits
New PhanArtist Arnaud Azoulay is a first generation American, born and raised in California to parents of Moroccan and Welsh decent. Arnaud has been studying the arts since high school, including stage, acting and drawing.
Arnaud’s early style of creating intense odd shapes and fantasy characters was driven by a passion for music, anything from jazz to opera, classical to metal.
In the mid-90s, Arnaud made posters for concerts at legendary L.A. venues The Roxy and The Whisky on Sunset Blvd. in 2002 Arnaud moved to NYC and survived off his art for some time. Recently, Arnaud has made a series of iconic abstract portraits, noting “If I can convey even the smallest expression of the passion that these artists have inspired in me, only then I can hope that I have done them justice.”
Arnaud currently lived in Paris, France with his wife and son. His name and work continue to gain great momentum as he makes his mark on the art world. Since Phish’s reunion in 2009, one of his favorite and most influential bands, he has devoted much of his time to creating new art inspired by and in the subject of their work. ”There are too many exciting Ideas I have in the works to even try and mention! But I know that a band such as Phish, and all of their fans… if anyone can, will truly appreciate my work and how much their music has done for me as a human being let alone an artist.”
In 1994, Arnaud went to his first Phish show (12/10/94) in Santa Monica CA. That same year when he started listening to Phish, he was improvising with pen on paper while they did what they do best. Arnaud notes, ” Fans know how far their music can reach inside of us and our imagination and creativity just flow … just like my pen would do simultaneously and still does every day. Ninety Percent of my work is totally improvised, so naturally long intence jams jut work for me! Music is always the source of my art it drives my passion for life and the unknown and for me they are just what I need to remind me of the wonder and possibilities in this life.”
