Six Years of PhanArt: The Art of the Fans of Phish!

Today marks 6 years since the start of PhanArt: The Art of the Fans of Phish! Over the past 6 years, we have made every effort to archive and compile the collection of Phish created fan-art (PhanArt) for purposes of historical and cultural preservation, create a book of this art for benefit of Mockingbird Foundation, and developed the PhanArt Blog as a central marketplace for fans, artists and PhanArtists to sell their wares and creations, with a percentage of all sales benefiting Mockingbird Foundation.

These past 6 years have been amazing and continue to get better. It took 4 years to get the PhanArt book to print, and so far we have sold over 430 copies of PhanArt: The Art of the Fans of Phish, featuring 1600 pieces of Phish PhanArt, collected well over 500 new pieces of PhanArt for a second edition of the book to be completed at a later date, and provided the Phish community with an outlet for their creativity when the lots arent open.

Our Mission Statement remains the same: PhanArt’s mission is to compile and preserve art created by Phish fans for the Phish community and, in the course of such work, to also benefit The Mockingbird Foundation, which raises funds for music education for children.

We look forward to seeing all the great art this fall for the New Years run, and ask you to spread the word about PhanArt to your friends and phamily!

Phamily Poker Tournament

Update 10/16/10: PhanArt is proud to Sponsor the 2010 Phamily Poker Classic. Posters, shirts and a copy of PhanArt: The Art of the Fans of Phish will be included as prizes in the event.

Announcing the 2010 Phamily Poker Classic!

The Phamily Poker Classic is a No Limit Texas Hold-em event that is for the phans and taking place in Atlantic City in the afternoon of October 30th with the final table taking place in the afternoon of October 31st. The Phamily Poker Classic is a completely non profit event with a portion of the proceeds going to The Mockingbird Foundation and the rest to the prize pool along with other cool donated items. The Tropicana Hotel & Casino is being gracious enough to help us run this event and with their help, I know that this will be a great experience for all involved!

Every player in The Phamily Poker Classic will have an opportunity to win the Tournament Bad Beat Progressive Jackpot. As of 9/12 the jackpot is currently at $49,768. Full details and rules for the Tournament Bad Beat Jackpot can be found here.

Each table will have a bounty player. This player is playing for the benefit of The Mockingbird Foundation and a special prize will be given to the player who knocks a bounty player out of the tournament. If a bounty player knocks another bounty player out of the tournament, then the latter bounty player’s prize (or prizes) will be added to the former bounty player’s prize(s). In the off chance that a bounty player wins the Tournament, the prize(s) that that player has will be auctioned off following the final table. While you will win a non-cash prize if you bust out a bounty player, we anticipate that the number and quality of non-cash prizes you receive for doing so will depend on the stage at which you knock out that bounty player and what prize(s) are carried by that bounty player at the time of knockout.

Tournament tickets are $120 and are available for advanced purchase at Cardboard Spaceship. If there is a demand to expand the tournament; additional seats may be available. Do not count on purchasing tickets at the door as this event is likely to be sold out in advance at 100 players.

Donations from artists

Over the course of Summer Tour Leg 1, we ran into artists both new and familiar, young and old. Altogether through the 11 shows PhanArt went to, plus the 42′ and PhanArt Art of the Fans of Phish Poster show on 6/20, 19 prints and other random items were donated to us for future auctions for The Mockingbird Foundation! This was an unreal show of support, especially from artists and fans who make their money on tour selling these items.

Here is a list of who donated what. If you want to buy one, for a donation to The Mockingbird Foundation, contact Pete at phanart at gmail and make an offer on a print. They will go into bundles for auctions later this year, after Jones Beach.

Five pins from Central Part of Town Pins, A PH/SH pin from Noah Phence, and Posters from Franky Scaglione, Bruce Horan, and Branden Otto and Ed Wilson. Check out the gallery to see what the Phish community has generously donated to help raise funds for The Mockingbird Foundation.

42 Degrees and PhanArt Poster show was a great success!

Thank you to all who came to the 42 Degrees and PhanArt present The Art of the Fans of Phish poster show on June 20th before the Sunday SPAC show. It was a great success with nearly 200 attendees, 20 artists, dozens of pieces of art available and some of the best glass in the Northeast. On behalf of everyone at 42 Degrees – Jon, Robin and Mike, and PhanArt Pete, we thank everyone for attending!

As long as Phish keeps playing SPAC, we hope to continue to make this a tradition for years to come!

Shane Smykla and an Amazing Trey Canvas Painting

Sometimes the youngest phans are well, noobs, sometimes they are cool, and sometimes they blow your mind. Shane Smykla from Ballston Spa is a 15 year old high school student and Phish fan. Completing this canvas print under the tutelage of Jeremy LebeDiker, his art teacher and fellow Phish fan (art from Jeremy coming soon).

Shane got into the Grateful Dead before he started listening to Phish. He fell in love with the band after watching Bittersweet Motel at a friends house after and Allman Brothers/Doobie Brothers show. So far Shane has only seen Phish once, on 8/16/09 at SPAC. (Great first show!) More shows are in the future for Shane this summer.

The painting measures 24″ x 36″ and is done ‘Acrylic Jazz style’ on canvas. He spent a month and a half completing the work. Shane is asking for $160 for this painting, or best offer. You can email him to work out a price for the painting. (shanesmykla@yahoo.com)

10% of the final sale price will benefit The Mockingbird Foundation.
