Sold-out concerts will not be the only attraction for Phish fans descending on Miami as 2009 draws to a close. Mock Show: EPIC NYE, a poster exhibition at the Epic Hotel on Wednesday, Dec. 30th, will feature the best poster art paying homage to Phish while raising funds for the nonprofit civic engagement organization HeadCount.
In keeping with HeadCount’s mission of “inspiring participation in democracy through the power of music,” HeadCount and the Mock Show organizers are planning several activities to make the Mock Show a true celebration of democracy. The first starts now, as HeadCount.org hosts a “Mock Election” to select the best Phish-inspired poster art of 2009. Voting begins today at http://www.headcount.org/mockshow.asp and results will be announced at the Mock Show. Winners in each category will be presented the coveted “Golden Tube.”
Artists with multiple nominations – all of whom will have their wares on display at the Mock Show – include Jim Pollock (PollockPrints), A.J Masthay, Ryan Kerrigan, Isadora Bullock, and Justin Helton (Status Serigraph). Categories include “Best Official Phish Print,” “Best b Print,” and in a special nod to HeadCount’s mission, “Best Political Art.” HeadCount will also hold balloted voting at the event to recognize the best posters created specifically for the Mock Show and Phish’s New Year’s Eve concerts.
Mock Show: EPIC NYE will encompass nearly the entire 14th floor of Miami’s luxurious EPIC Hotel – located within walking distance of the American Airlines Arena where Phish will perform later that evening. The exhibition begins at 10am and is open until 3pm that afternoon. Tickets are on sale at http://www.amockshow.com/ and include a complimentary commemorative 2010 calendar featuring work from many of the artists featured in the exhibition.
Over 30 exhibitors will display original art created in homage to Phish. Miami-based 101/exhibit Gallery will hold a special showcase of rare Pollock prints and originals. Atlanta-based Jeff Wood (Drowning Creek) will also be displaying his wares at the Mock Show for the first time. Other exhibitors include David Welker, Sei Ray Ho (Us & Them Studio), Fred Hosman (HoscoPress), Tripp (Taboot Art), Ian Millard, Erin Cadigan, Drew Findley, Bruce Horan, Ryan Jerzy, Jon Lamb and Michael Ortiz (Like Minded Productions), and HeadCount Art Director Jamie Huntsman (Bittersweet Creations).
This is the second Mock Show exhibition this year following the inaugural event in Denver, Colorado in August that attracted nearly one thousand art collectors. The event raised over $10,000 for charity, supporting other music-related nonprofits the Mockingbird Foundation and the Waterwheel Foundation. At the upcoming event, HeadCount will receive a portion of proceeds from the sale of the event poster, created by artist David Welker. Welker is most recognized for his Phish album cover art on the 1993 release “Rift.,” which Relix magazine listed as one of the most iconic album covers of all time. HeadCount will also be selling poster tubes and event t-shirts at the show and holding a silent auction for items donated from Relix Magazine, Lava Lite, LLC, Bambu, and Mock Show promoter and professional event photographer Jason Kaczorowski. Plus, Mock Show attendees will be able to conveniently register to vote at the HeadCount table.
