PhanArt: The Art of the Fans of Phish by Pete Mason
Review by: Bryant Weathers
“Phanart: The art of the fans of Phish” is a book by the phans, and for the phans. While I’m a youngster in the Phish community, this book can help any old-timer remember the fond memories of 2004 and before. This huge compilation of over 400 pages of artwork by some of the most dedicated and devoted phans demonstrates fandom at its finest. Page by page, the reader can observe countless hours that artists put into their life-long passion.
A great coffee table piece, this is something that I leave out in my living room for any visitor to pick up and enjoy. When someone comes over to visit that has little or no knowledge of Phish, and they pick up this book, they are surprised to find out how devoted individuals are to a band that they know nothing about. Impressed, they almost always want to know more about the band, and this book serves as a good introduction to the band Phish and the Phish community.
With such an incredible community to highlight, this book has very few downfalls. With thousands of pieces of artwork inside, a reader will always discover something new when they open this book. While few and far between, the quality of some of the graphics is grainy, however, but don’t let that deter you from purchasing this book. The book is expensive, and a hard investment to commit to, but please note, that all net-profits go to the Mockingbird Foundation, a group of fans working to ensure schools and organizations nationwide have the monetary support for music education, so there is a philanthropic initiative to purchasing this gem.
