Welcome to PhanArt 2.0

10 years ago, PhanArt began as a book by compiling the art of Phish fans and artists over the band’s history. 2009 saw the book published and money was raised to support The Mockingbird Foundation and music education. Over the next five years, PhanArt evolved into a website for fans and artists alike to sell their art and reach a broader audience. In the past two years, PhanArt Poster and Pin shows have become must-attend events during Phish runs, connecting artists, fans, and fans-turned-artists in an exhibition environment. What started as an idea for a book to benefit charity has become so much more.

Today, with the launch of the PhanArt 2.0 website, a new design and layout will make the art more accessible and interactive, and highlight a variety of art from a wider array of artists. From concert poster artists to street artists, fans to official prints, PhanArt will become a broader site for a wider variety of art, and in addition to highlighting the art of Phish fans, the expanding website will bring varying art styles and artists to a wider audience.

The mission of PhanArt is to promote art in all forms, especially Concert Posters, Street Art, Official Prints and Fan Creations, and in the course of such work, to benefit The Mockingbird Foundation, which raises funds for music education for children. PhanArt shifts from being ‘The Art of the Fans of Phish’ to focusing on ‘Music, Art and Community’, reflecting on the roots of the brand – art inspired by music – and reaches out to broader audiences with continued art shows at locations around the country. Phish inspired and official art will continue to be found on the website, but will not be the only art to be found on a daily basis.

Great thanks goes out to Kyle Welch for the site design, Nate Meyer of Band Shirt Archive for hosting and Alexandra Evers for her redesign of the new PhanArt logo.

To celebrate the launch of PhanArt 2.0, for the month of October, 2014, nearly ALL items in the PhanArt Store will be discounted 10-20%.

PhanArt will continue to solicit and gather donations to benefit The Mockingbird Foundation, a charity that has raised over $800,000 to benefit music education throughout the country. Of that total, PhanArt is proud to have contributed over $18,000 since 2009, an amount made up mostly of small donations from artists and fans.

Stay tuned for an announcement on Tuesday with details on the next PhanArt Poster and Pin Exhibition, to be held November 1st in Las Vegas, Nevada! – Pete, Kelley, Chris, Jim, Chris and Taylor

‘A Well Traveled Dog’ – a Children’s Book by Pete Mason – now on Pre-Sale!

halley a well traveled dog KERRIGAN 001 (2)In November 1999, I rescued my dog Halley from the SPCA in Syracuse. Over the last 14 years, she and I have traversed the country twice and gone on dozens of regional trips. Over time she has been to 48 states, Mexico, Canada, and all points in between. Halley has been on some incredible adventures together and found every trip she has been on to be one full of curiosity and exploration, checking out each new locale and not wasting a moment.

In March of this year, I started a Kickstarter campaign that was successful and aided the publication of the first book in the series, ‘A Well Traveled Dog’, which focuses on Halley’s travels and her sense of curiosity as she visits cities, family and destinations around the country. The book is fully illustrated by Bay Area artist Ryan Kerrigan and today, Halley’s 15th birthday, the book is available for pre-sale. The book will ship in mid-November, in time for the holidays. All copies are signed by Pete and Halley. The cost is $22 with free shipping. Pick one up today and check out a couple sample pages from the book!

Guess the Dick’s Setlist Art, Part 2

Here we are with Part 2 of our ‘Guess the Dick’s Setlist Art’. We put together a few setlists and enlisted Josean Rivera, who makes setlist art based on individual setlists of shows, and he has taken our themes and turned them into art.

No setlist is provided, so you need to figure out the theme and setlist based on the images alone.  Click the image to enlarge.

Guess the Dick’s Setlist Art, Part 1

With the annual run at Dick’s just a few days away, speculation as to what the band will play the first night – a theme or spelled out set – is at a usual highpoint. There is so much potential that we put together a few setlists and enlisted Josean Rivera, who makes setlist art based on individual setlists of shows, to take our themes and turn them into art.

The catch – no setlist is provided, nor is the theme. See if you can guess the theme of the art, as well as setlist, looking at his art. Click the image to enlarge.

What you need to know about Phish at SPAC, including a Map and Post-show info

This was originally posted for the June 2010 Phish shows at SPAC. With a few tweaks, some updates and punctuation improvements, here is what you need to know about going to SPAC for Phish during July 3-5, 2014.

PH1_0151

First things first, follow UpstateLIVE on Twitter for helpful hints will abound throughout the weekend. We’ll be on location all weekend sharing: traffic info, park updates ( and keeping fans aware of the police presence. In 2013, Saratoga officials announced a crackdown on alcohol and intoxicated people in the state park known as SPA, which includes SPAC. In the past, there has always been a lot of chatter preceding the summer concert season at SPAC regarding the increased police presence and no-alcohol policy (with ticket enforcement and arrest potential). In 2013, beers that were visible in the bottle were confiscated and someone ended up with an incredible supply of heady brews. Don’t treat SPAC lots as a free for all – this is a New York State Park and State Troopers roam the grounds, not local police.

You’ll need this – the map of Saratoga Spa State Park. It is VERY easy to get lost, as you can quite easily wind up walking around for an hour looking for the lot your car is in, or altogether become disoriented. Download PDF: SPAC Map

In the interest of making sure everyone knows what has been the norm in the past, whether you have been here before or not, keep in mind a few things:

State Troopers : Younger fans, keep the alcohol under lock and key, as alcohol sensors have been used in the past. If they see you drinking, they’ll dip in a stick detector for alcohol into the drink and then they can search you. Arcane? Yes. Illegal? Possibly. Outlandish and Insane? Indeed. Don’t stress, just play it smart! This comes from people who have been there and people who work there. Use your heads.

Hotels have also been given a contact number to call if they suspect drug use. So be careful when you are pre-gaming at the hotel or getting back and trying to enjoy the post-show scene or get some sleep.

Post show, there will be checkpoints for drunk driving and K-9 units for the obvious. Don’t leave the park without a sober driver and when you do, drive the speed limit, the cops need only a small reason to pull you over, either on Route 9, Route 50, I-87 or the small towns north and south of Saratoga.

While in town….

phishweek1

Post shows, there are a couple of options right in Saratoga for those who want to keep the party going and are equipped with a designated driver to keep it going till the sun comes up.
The Putnam Den has fast become the premier live music venue in Saratoga, after SPAC. There are three late night shows, one for each night of Phish and only TWO miles from SPAC! Plus, there are more shows each night at The Parting Glass, literally a 0.3 mile walk from Putnam Den. Both venues feature incredible music and a discount if you buy passes to both post-shows each night.

You can find all the info on the post-shows here, but in short, here are your choices for post-Phish music:
July 3rd – Lucid at Putnam Den
July 4th – Waylon Speed at The Parting Glass
July 4th – Twiddle at Putnam Den
July 5th – Formula 5 at The Parting Glass
July 5th – Pigeons Playing Ping Pong at Putnam Den

The address of The Putnam Den is 63A Putnam St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. For more info on each of the shows, visit the Putnam Den website www.putnamden.com

See you all at SPAC!

The Philosophy School of Phish – First an Online Class, Now a Documentary!

There have been more than a few college papers written about Phish, whether in music class, sociology, or you found some really clutch angle in Gamehendge to discuss the crisis in some corner of the world. We have all been there, a couple times in some cases. (ahem) But when you have an entire college course that connects Phish to Philosophy, then you have something much deeper and far more interesting than most college papers could ever hope to become.

Enter Stephanie Jenkins, a philosophy professor at Oregon State University and a longtime Phish phan. This summer, Stephanie plans to combine her two passions in an online college course nicknamed the “Philosophy School of Phish”, and a documentary film in the works.7e3ff290948df894c13fce5c58349279_large

“I have to find what students are passionate about in order to speak to them about philosophy,” Jenkins said. “Phish, or any pop culture topic, elicits interest and engages them. It’s really about teaching effectively in ways that students will remember and use for the rest of their lives.”

Stephanie’s goal this summer is to make this experience of teaching the online class accessible to everyone by filming a documentary about the class, discuss why Phish matters, and what happens when Foucault meets Fluffhead. The classroom” in this case will be on the road with Phish. Here, Prof. Jenkins will explore the meaning of Phish’s music, and why over the past 30 years, they’ve spawned a devoted community of fans who see them over and over (and over) again. Students will talk with fans and some of the most influential voices from the Phish community, as well as various lectures on tour, on the web, and at conferences across the country.

Stephanie has started a Kickstarter campaign to help fund her Philosophy School of Phish documentary, and is looking for support from fans to make this come true. A truly educational product, with deep roots in philosophy and the sociology of the Phish community, this film has great potential to showcase the embedded intelligence and knowledge networks of the Phish community. This film will break the mold, showing how Phish is a celebration of adventure, a gathering place for ritual and wonder, and a home for the child in us all.

Show Stephanie some support in her campaign and let’s make this movie!
