Alt-J formed while at Leeds University in 2007. The band’s unusual sound stems from the fact that due to living in student halls, where noise had to be kept to a minimum, they were unable to use bass guitars or bass drums. They were voted Best British Album and band of the year in 2012. The band’s symbol is the delta sign, ∆, which is traditionally used in scientific study to indicate “change” or “difference”. On May 16, Garcia’s at The Capitol Theatre will host Formula 5, SOLARiS and a PhanArt show, from 6pm until 1am. This show features two rising bands from Upstate New York and an exhibition from artists AJ Masthay, Fred Sutter, Pinsanity Designs and The Shakedown Shop. Tickets are available now.

Also available at the PhanArt show will be a limited number of David Welker’s “Rutherford” the first in a series of prints from the upcoming The Phish Companion, 3rd Edition, with proceeds to benefit The Mockingbird Foundation. Tubes will be available for purchase at the show.
Copies of PhanArt: The Art of the Fans of Phish will be available for the first time since 2011, with a limited run of 50 books printed.
Garcia’s doors open for the PhanArt show at 6pm sharp with music starting at 830pm. Admission to the show is $10 and includes performances by Formula 5 and SOLARiS. The PhanArt show will run from 6-10pm while music will go until 1am. Garcia’s bar will be open throughout the show.
Formula 5, hailing from Albany and Lake George, NY, have recently released their first live album Live Five, Vol. 1, with Summer Tour dates across New York and New England. SOLARiS, a high energy jamtronica trio from Ithaca, NY will start the night out. The two bands perform for the first time at Garcia’s, a venue known for discovering emerging talent alongside established acts performing at The Capitol Theatre.

This set of four screen prints was made for The Disco Biscuits ‘Disco Inferno’ run in Colorado at Red Rocks in April 2015 by artist Nick Doyle. Pianist Holly Bowling, known for her transcription and performance of Phish’s “Tahoe Tweezer” announced today the recording of an album of Phish originals, “Distillation of a Dream.”
Melding her classical piano chops with a dedicated love of the music of Phish, “Distillation of a Dream” originates from Bowling’s obsession with Phish’s rendition of “Tweezer” from their 7/31/13 Lake Tahoe show. Bowling transcribed this 37-minute improvisational masterpiece note-for-note and arranged it for solo piano. The process, both painstaking and fulfilling, inspired Bowling to transform other Phish songs and well-known live jams into solo piano interpretations as well.
The dual experiences of studying classical piano since age five and attending close to 300 Phish shows have allowed Holly to unite elements from two divergent musical worlds and synthesize them into a creation all its own. Having transformed several notable Phish jams into solo piano works, Bowling has been fastidious in her commitment to note-for-note renderings of unique live performances of Phish’s music.
Bowling explains the evolution of these transcriptions, saying “I started doing these arrangements and transcriptions for myself, sort of as a hobby, because I really enjoyed it. When I performed them live though, I realized other people really loved hearing their favorite Phish songs and jams transformed into solo piano works. I was getting a lot of requests from people wanting to download a recording, but I didn’t have any good quality audio to offer up. So I decided to record this album.”
When asked the goal of her recorded album, Bowling stated, “I think it would be really amazing if ‘Distillation of a Dream’ influenced people who listen to Phish to expand their musical tastes into some of the solo piano music out there…and on the other side, for people who listen to classical music and would never dream of going to a Phish show to hear the band’s music in a different setting and maybe fall in love with the incredible music and compositions that this band has created.”
“Distillation of a Dream” includes two discs, the first highlighting Phish’s intricate songwriting, and the second a tribute to the spontaneous improvisation Phish creates during their live performances. The second disc, consisting entirely of “jam transcriptions”, contains three piano reinterpretations of standout live performances, including the “Tahoe Tweezer.” All tracks will be released as a double album on CD and the “Tahoe Tweezer” will also be released on 180 gram vinyl. A portion of the proceeds from sales of “Distillation of a Dream” will benefit The Mockingbird Foundation.

Eelus has two new pieces of work to debut. A new painting titled “Beyond the Red Curtain”, painted for the Cut-It-Out stencil show that opened at Urban Nation Berlin recently. You can see the full details for my piece HERE and you can also read the story behind the process in his journal.
Back in 2010 Eelus released a print called “Firestarter” as part of his Paradise Lost show at Brooklynite Gallery in New York. 10 were printed without the fire reflecting in the young chaps spectacles, the idea being to paint something different in there instead and release them as a hand finished edition. These ‘lost’ prints became buried under mountains of other curiosities and were subsequently forgotten about. Lost orphans of the print world, until they were re-discovered recently and finally finished. Better late than never.
In All Good Company, an art show celebrating 50 years of Grateful art will be held at Congress Plaza Hotel in Chicago, IL on July 3, 4 & 5, 2015. Presented by PhanArt, this extensive art show will feature artists from across the history of the Grateful Dead, exhibiting and selling a wide variety of art and memorabilia.
This one of a kind art show will be held on each day of “Fare Thee Well: Celebrating 50 Years of Grateful Dead”, held at Chicago’s Soldier Field July 3-5, 2015, reuniting the ‘Core Four’ of the Grateful Dead alongside Trey Anastasio, Bruce Hornsby and Jeff Chimenti.
The lineup for In All Good Company will be announced in the spring.
