Philosophy School of Phish Returns this summer with a Field Trip to the Gorge and MORE!

For the fifth summer in a row, Dr. Stephanie Jenkins will teach the “Philosophy School of Phish” course—more formally called the “Philosophy of Art and Music”— via Oregon State University’s Ecampus program. Using the band as a case study, the course focuses on themes about the nature and significance of art and music. As part of their required course work, students attend three Phish concerts— in person or via webcast— and conduct philosophical interviews with artists from the Phish community. Learning about theories of art and music experientially helps students actively engage with the philosophical content and learn more about the Phish community.

During the 2018 summer term, students will have the opportunity to participate in a field trip to attend Phish’s three-night run at the Gorge Amphitheater from July 20-22. Students will camp together at the venue. In addition to attending the concerts, students will participate in a “Phish Studies” colloquium, which will feature guest lectures from interdisciplinary scholars researching the band at other academic institutions.

Over the course of the weekend, the students will film their experiences. They will later use this video footage to complete the “Concert Field Notes” assignment requirement for the course. Dr. Jenkins and filmmaker Kelly Morris, founder of the MORE Project and Be MORE Now Films, will collaborate with the students to edit their video submissions into a film about Phish and Philosophy, to be published in the Public Philosophy Journal and circulated throughout the “phan” community.

Registration is now open! To participate in the Gorge field trip, students must be enrolled in PHL 360—offered via OSU’s Ecampus– and the corresponding one-credit lab section, during session three of OSU’s summer term (June 25–August 17). Students who are interested in this opportunity for experiential learning and contribution to faculty research can contact Dr. Jenkins at jenkstep@oregonstate.eduYou do not have to be a current OSU student to take the class.

Enrolling in the lab course will give participating students the opportunity to:

  • Collaborate with a professional filmmaker: Kelly Morris, filmmaker and founder of Be More Now Films, will meet with students during the field trip and oversee the editing of the final public philosophy video.
  • Engage in communal, experiential learning: With the addition of an on-campus lab credit, students will be immersed in their learning experience together as a class. This is not possible with an online only course.
  • Participate in faculty research: The final film will be published in the Public Philosophy Journal. As part of this project, Dr. Jenkins and Kelly Morris will be participating, as invited researchers, in the Public Philosophy Journal Creative Writing Workshop at Michigan State University from May 16-18, 2018.

Fish Pherris Wheel by Victor Stabin

Artist Victor Stabin has released ‘Fish Pherris Wheel‘, part of his Turtle Series of paintings. Victor was born in Brooklyn and studied art starting as a teen and is inspired by many facets of his own life including his family, an interest in the connection between man and nature, water and the water’s edge, the 19th Century Japanese watercolor print artists and many more influences.

Stabin’s illustrations have appeared in TimeNewsweek, and Rolling Stone, and has to his credit nine postage stamps commissioned by the US Postal service, a mural for RCA/BMG’s headquarters, and the cover of the KISS album, Unmasked. Most recently, he has had four pieces installed at radio station WNYC and his ABC Book Daedal Doodle is on sale at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Stabin and award-winning animator Ben Arthur are currently in production of the animated short which masterfully combines fantastic imagery, tongue-in-cheek storytelling, and vocabulary learning; using the backdrop of public radio. Check out their Kickstarter campaign.

Stabin’s ‘Fish Pherris Wheel’ is now available for purchase. About the piece, in the artist’s words:

“In a parallel utopian universe, a place where world peace is not just a dream, waste is forbidden, ecology is god and economies are built on thrift not theft. There will be abundant surpluses of time and resource; this new world will for the first time give us abilities to reach past old boundaries to exploring new worlds and ultimately give humanity the ability to embrace Phish.

In this universe, humankind awoke and realized the tremendous role that sea life has played in fostering global evolution. To show our aquatic brothers and sisters appreciation, the people of earth build a Fish Pherris Wheel that benignly lifts sea life from their aqueous world into our atmospheric world and as gently returns them to the sea.

The Fish Pherris Wheel became a particularly hot attraction during sunset and sunrise hours, so much so that amphibious creatures (who already had access to atmospheric viewing) such as Walruses, Turtles, Penguins, Horse Shoe Crabs, etc., were only allowed to ride on Tuesdays and alternate weekends.”

Antelope: The Inspired Art of Erin Huybrechts Davis

Lifelong painter and trained artist, Erin Huybrechts Davis, captures her inspiration on canvas. Erin’s special love for the flora and fauna of Colorado blends seamlessly with the influence of Eastern Art, Philosophy and Religion, all finding their way into her many paintings. In Erin’s latest work, “Antelope”, her love for Phish can be discerned by the attentive eye. Mockingbirds fly as Antelope run in what could almost be a landscape of Gamehendge itself. Look even closer and you will see a nod to Gordon.

“Antelope” entices you with its dramatic sky and the serenity of a natural paradise of living creatures. Enter its world.

Music Empowering Women: A Photographic Anthology – Celebrating the Beauty of Community

Sophia Callisto has developed a new coffee table style book that celebrates the beauty of community and seeks to empower women through music, particularly in the Phish community. The book, Music Empowering Women: A Photographic Anthology, will feature over 100 women portraying related themes and sharing what the music and community mean to them. The content of Music Empowering Women is meant to be sexy and classy (with no nudity), and will feature female fans from all around the country, as well as artists and vendors of various types who will be featured alongside the models.

Callisto says through the Indiegogo Campaign, “In my own love of music, I have found an incredible and close-knit community of amazing people that share this common interest. All of the creative concepts are my own and I will be traveling to multiple locations throughout the U.S. to meet with the women involved and do each photo shoot.”

Currently, 40 shoots have been outlined and an outpouring of support and interest in the project has Callisto launching an Indiegogo campaign to catch the momentum. She has shared with PhanArt character sketches for Lawn Boy, The Famous Mockingbird, Winter Queen and Mercury, as well as water colors that will be used as incentives for support of the campaign.
