The Mockingbird Foundation is excited to announce “Rutherford”, the first in a series of art prints commissioned for our upcoming book The Phish Companion – 3rd Edition. Gloriously executed by the brilliant David Welker, the artist behind Phish’s Rift cover art, this print features an armor-suited Rutherford plunging into the depths of a raging river. Framed by rich Gamehendgian imagery, David’s stunning interpretation will be reproduced in TPC3 to introduce the first era of Phish.
This is the first in a series of eight art prints being created by top artists, each representing a different era of the band’s career. Each print will be reproduced in full color in TPC3, and also sold as limited edition prints (both individually, and as a complete set). More details about the print series will be released in the coming weeks.
David has created a special mirror foil edition of “Rutherford”, which we are excited to make available via our friends at Bottleneck Gallery. This screenprint measures 24″ x 18″, is printed on mirror foil paper (similar to David’s acclaimed Alpharetta ’14 print), and has an edition size of 600. (There will also be a standard edition of the print, to be sold at a later date.)
The mirror foil edition of “Rutherford” will go on sale at 12:00 noon EDT on March 31, 2015, via the Bottleneck Gallery website, for $100. Sales are limited to one per person.
“I am ecstatic to present what has been a true labor of love for both of us – The Lino King. This collaboration with the insanely talented David Welker is a 6 color hand pulled silkscreen and is available in three editions – Silver, Gold and Line Art. Printed by Welker Studios, all separations for this print were hand drawn by myself and David, who then painstakingly stitched them together in preparation of burning the screens.”
Here are all the details: 6 layer hand pulled screen print, 15″ x 25″ on 100lb French Sno Cone, Numbered and signed by both artists, Silver edition of 90 with 10 AP’s, Gold Edition of 30 with 10 AP’s, Line Art Edition of 20
The collaboration prints will be available exclusively through MasthayStudios.com on Wednesday, July 18th at 12 noon EST. There will be a strictly enforced 1 per person limit on all prints.
Finally rested and able to sort through all the fan and official merch that we picked up this tour, we present PhanArt’s Best of Summer 2010, Leg 1
Best official print: David Welker, CMAC, edition of 550, Size: 18 x 24 inches Edition: 550
Best Official Merch: Merit Badges!
Prints didn’t always sell out, but these did. And when they are going for $50 a piece (via expressobeans.com) and the cost was potentially under $1, you gotta stand back and applaud whoever came up with this idea. Here’s to hoping it continues.
Best Fan prints and shirts
SPAC produced some of the greatest fan prints. These four were some of the many seen on lot.
The next Mock Show Phish Poster convention will be held on Wednesday, December 30th from 10am-3pm in beautiful downtown Miami, not far from the venue. Located on the 14th floor of the EPIC HOTEL (270 Biscayne Blvd. Way, Miami), fans will be able to see dozens of artists throughout the expansive and aptly named EPIC HOTEL. Artists will be spread throughout the Metropolis Ballrooms, Gotham A & B Ballrooms, Baxter Room & Entire Foyer.
The 5th Phish poster convention and 2nd Mock Show will be held December 30th from 10am-3pm at EPIC HOTEL in Miami, Florida. As with other conventions, dozens of artists and exhibitors will be on hand displaying some unique prints both old and new, as well as donate to great fan-based charities.
Having attended the first two conventions as a fan and taken part in the last two as a charitable organization (as PhanArt nets profits for Mockingbird Foundation through sales of PhanArt and other lot art), I have to say these are MUSTSEE and MUSTATTEND events for even the casual observer of lot art. Some AMAZING art is found here. The Poster show in Miami on 12/30/03 was the show that got me hooked on the lot art, and it’s been a great ride ever since. In fact, it’s fair to say that these poster-conventions were the early catalyst for PhanArt: The Art of the Fans of Phish!
Of the artists listed above, there are several official Phish artists including Jim Pollock, David Welker, Jeff Wood, Justin Helton and Sei Rey Ho of Us & Them Studio. This is Ho’s and Wood’s first Mock Shows, joining a crop of artists who have taken part in many, if not all poster shows dating back to 1/3/03 in Hampton, VA.
PhanArtists such as Ryan Kerrigan, Tripp, AJ Masthay, Isadora Bullock, Fred Hosman of HoscoPress, Bruce Horan, Erin Cadigan, Uncle & Aunt Ebeneezer, Noah Phence, Ryan Jerzy, Jamie Huntsman, Vince Naro, and FrankyScaglione will have their art on display, as will Michael Ortiz & Jon Lamb of LikeMindedProductions, Ian Millard and Drew Findley of Subject Matter Studios. Mock Show creator and PhanArtist JasonKaczorowski will be showcasing his concert/festival and celebrityportrait photography in a special exhibition.
Included amongst the artists are non-profit organizations Waterwheel Foundation, Mockingbird Foundation, PhanArt (thats us!) and the main beneficiary from the event, Headcount. Headcount will be sponsoring an exciting opportunity for patrons to engage themselves in the democratic process of voting by helping stage a juried art event wherein patrons will receive ballots upon entry (and previously online) to “vote” for the their artists spanning various categories including “Best of Show”, “Best New Artist”, “Best Mock Show Poster” among others.
These votes will be tallied and awards will be presented during a catered VIP banquet ceremony Thursday, December 31st, 2009 from Noon-4pm. The awards ceremony will feature an additional surprise roster of artists exhibiting in a currently undisclosed location. Check back November 30th when tickets go on sale to learn how you can be one of only 100 special VIP guests to attend this inaugural awards ceremony dubbed “The Posties” where the coveted “Golden Tubes” will be distributed to artists voted best in their field. You’ll have a unique opportunity to talk candidly with artists, browse an exclusive collection of fine art on display, attend the afternoon’s inaugural “Posties” ceremony all while enjoying a premium open bar and delicious hors d’oeuvres. More information at on the Mock Show website starting Monday, November 30th, 2009 when tickets go on sale.
