$5,000 Donated to The Mockingbird Foundation from PhanArt thanks to artists and fans!

I would like to thank all the artists who have displayed their Phish-inspired creations here on PhanArt over the last two years. Starting in the fall of 2009, PhanArt evolved from the original 400+ page coffee table book into an online site for fans to sell their Phish-inspired art, at no cost to them. The site has grown and become the main place for Phanart off the lot. The artists who have taken part in the site contributed art or made donations direct to The Mockingbird Foundation based on sales from fans like you. Without the fans and the artists, the $5,000 raised as of this past weekend would not have been attainable.

On to the next $5,000!

PhanArt Pete

PhanArt: The Art of the Fans of Phish, the coffee table book turned website featuring art inspired by the legendary band Phish has donated more than $5,000 to The Mockingbird Foundation. In just two years as a website, Phanart.net has been the #1 website for Phish fan-made merchandise and a marketplace for Phish artists and fans to buy and sell their Phanart, free of charge.

Starting in February of 2009 with the publication of PhanArt, the not-for-profit effort donated money to Mockingbird and sought to generate greater awareness of Mockingbird over the following summer. Pete Mason, a special education teacher living in Albany,NY developed Phanart.net, a website where Phish fans and artists can sell their Phish inspired art free of charge, with a simple request to donate some of their phanart or a percentage of sales directly to Mockingbird.

“PhanArt has been a labor of love for many years now and I am incredibly grateful that artists and fans in the Phish community have come together and have supported this book and website over the past 3 years and raising money for music education in the process.” Mason noted that both the book and the website are both an impressive collaborative effort that led to an expansion of the Phish art community and returned money back to that community. “My thanks go out to the artists who donated a portion of their sales and the fans for driving the sales through the site. This would not be possible without their efforts.”

While artists can make money on the website by selling their art, Mason continues to decline compensation for running the website and providing an outlet for Phish fans to reach other fans. “I find no reason to make profit off the art of others and keep the website open to all so that Phish fans can share their unique Phish inspired creations with others, make a little money to help them to get to the next show and donate to Mockingbird Foundation in the process.” Mason added, “Both PhanArt the book and the website were designed to showcase a slice of musicalAmericanathat would otherwise have faded into obscurity and give back into the community from which it came, through funding music education throughout the country”

Through the project website www.phanart.net, fans submitted art they had created in honor of the band. Original posters, bumper stickers, shirts, tattoos and even painted cars and license plates are some of the items Mason and his team has collected since starting the initiative in 2004. Only original items, not licensed by the band, are accepted for inclusion in PhanArt.

The 400+ page book feature more than 1600 pieces of art and over 40 essays, all created by fans of Phish, as well as numerous fan memories and stories collected over the bands 21-year existence. A version of PhanArt will be available for iPad, Kindle and other e-readers in early December.

The $5,000 amount is notable as it is the full grant amount that Mockingbird Foundation provides in their competitive grant process.

Jack Lebowitz, a founder and director of The Mockingbird Foundation said, “Of all our partners and supporters, PhanArt shares a special relationship with the Mockingbird Foundation by both of us having published books obsessively documenting grass roots Phish fan culture, and donating the proceeds for charity.”

“The Mockingbird Foundation recognizes Pete Mason and PhanArt’s contribution in cataloging the visual arts spun off by Phish fandom in poster art and lot merch in the PhanArt book. We salute’s Pete’s significant accomplishment in raising over $5,000 through sales of his book, merchandise and events.”

Grantees of Mockingbird have included schools, community centers, hospitals, shelters, workshops, camps, and scholarship programs fromMainetoCalifornia, from Appalachia to the Southwest, and fromKentuckyto Kosovo. The Mockingbird Foundation differs from other funders in the music in important ways, focusing on small grants, typically to unconventional programs and/or those catering to underserved children.

Announcing the PhanArt ‘Read the Fucking Book’ Club

Phish is a band that has generated a great deal of press over the years, with reviews in papers in the towns the band and their fans travel to, as well as articles in magazines and dozens of websites and blogs dedicated to The Phish from Vermont. Over time, the band’s history and fans have led to a number of books about Phish. When asked this summer by a non-Phish fan how many books were written about Phish, I couldn’t come up with an answer and the idea for a Book Club of sorts was born. Not a Book Club where we all sit down and have tea or something and discuss books, but an online Book Club where fans can find out about Phish books, read them and share their thoughts online with other fans. An interactive web-based Book Club with nothing but suggestions of books to read given and opinions shared when the books are read.
As a teacher, I felt this would also help to promote literacy, always a good thing at any age or level of education.  Over the next few weeks, we will be bringing you The ‘Read the Fucking Book’ Club. There is no cost to join. In fact, you are already a member just by reading this. Welcome to the club! There will be a page here on PhanArt.net that has all the Phish books written over the years. Click on a book and read a review by one of our primary reviewers and places where you can buy each book. Fans will be able to share their reviews of the books in the comments section of each page and discuss the finer points of Phish Lit.
Included in the ‘Read the Fucking Book’ Club will be:
The Phish Companion (volumes 1 and 2) by The Mockingbird Foundation
The Pharmers Almanac (volumes 1 through 6) by Bernstein, Steele, Chasnoff, Celentano, et.al
PhanArt: The Art of the Fans of Phish by Pete Mason
The Diary of Bobby Steiner: Tour Tales from the New Millenium by William Traveler
Mr. Miner’s Phish Thoughts by David Calarco (coming this holiday season)
The Melody of Motion: Following Phish and Widespread Panic by Carl Cole

Java John’s Gallery Reception July 24th in Melbourne, FL

Another Classic Rock ‘n’ Roll Art & Photography Exhibition featuring the artworks of “Java” John Goldacker

July 24th – September 9th, 2011
King Center of the Performing Arts (Lobby)
3865 N Wickham Rd., Melbourne, FL 32934

“Java” John is an in demand local Graphic Artist/Illustrator, and photographer. A designer of music related posters and CD covers, Festival posters and T-Shirts, and more. John illustrated the book “River Dragon” about the local legend Annie the Dragon, and he’s also been featured in PhotoShop Creative Magazine, and had his posters reproduced in the 2009 books – “PhanArt: The Art of the Fans of Phish“; and “HOPE: A Collection of Obama Posters and Prints”.

In 2008 & 09, he was also selected along with 35 artists to be a part of the Orlando and Miami Gibson “GUITARTOWNS“, having painted original artwork on two 10ft tall Gibson guitar replicas. The 70 guitars were donated by the artists, then auctioned and raised approximately $400,000.00 for local charities! In December ‘09, Brevard’s Beachside Resident magazine ran a three page article on John’s artwork, and had him design a Holiday themed cover featuring Bob Dylan.

At Melbourne’s KING CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS, John’s photos from various concerts from the past two years permanently grace the walls in the venue’s hallways.

This summer John’s photo was used on the cover of FREEBO’s newest CD “Something to Believe”, and he is currently wrapping up illustrations for a book written for children of all ages, called “Bud The Spud”. Written by local writer Adam Bryn Tritt, the book will go into national publication later this year!

Phish Tour as Vacation

This article was originally published in the Early Summer 2011 issue of Surrender to the Flow Magazine, #29.

Phish Tour as Vacation

What constitutes a vacation is different for each person and each family with variables based on cost, class and the intrinsic need for adventure. Those of means are able to travel throughout the country and across the globe in style, dining on exotic meals in locations both exclusive and secluded and broadening their views of the world from a safe distance. Many in the middle class including those with families are relegated to the once or twice a year typical vacation spots – Orlando, Myrtle Beach, National Parks, State Parks, beaches and other destinations that are economically feasible and work into the busy calendar of life. There are those who are unable to plan for, let alone set the time aside for, a vacation and make do with brief local escapes to see family and friends, forgoing leaving town for the ‘staycation’. Although that’s a lame word, many have no other way to escape reality for the important rejuvenation a vacation can bring..

For those who see Phish, vacation is a different beat altogether. While we might fit one of the aforementioned vacations into our yearly lives, Phish tour is the vacation of choice for many fans. Our love of Phish is the driving force behind our choice on where and when we take a break from the real world and focus on getting together with friends and rejuvenating our spirit through a most unique vacation that is not available through any travel website, travel agent or vacation club.

Most people take vacations with their family, but with us it’s our Phamily. How we get there and where we go depends on who we are, where we live and how far we can afford to travel on a given tour. Our travel styles vary yet we all arrive and we all get in. The single rider travels to meet with friends and head into the show. Couples ride together and bond over the trip to and from each show, adding to their story another chapter or ending the journey because it just wasn’t right. Families are starting to appear more on tour as our fan base ages and taking kids to a show isn’t something to be surprised at anymore whether we embrace it or not. By moving from town to town, going on an entire tour or a leg or run of shows or doing whatever is local and convenient, it becomes our vacation. More importantly, our vacation comes to us and can be taken 2-3 times a year in some cases, especially if you live in the Northeast or Midwest.

As my friend Emilie Goldenberg reminded me, “Tour is like summer camp for adults.” Many of us went to summer camp and enjoyed the activities, the bonds among friends, seeing old friends again each summer. Finding the joy of tour that is unseen anywhere else – THAT is our vacation and the heart of Phish tour. Before camp as a kid and tour as an adult, there are the jitters of excited nervousness, the potential to see old friends, the excitement of what might happen, what might change, where we might go on a side trip and what debacles may befall the group on our trip this time around. During camp/tour, expectations are pushed aside for the reality of the shows we see, the adventures we go on with our friends and the stories made through the unpredictability of tour. When it ends, we long for more but instead find our way back home, exhausted and hungry for ‘real’ food, a good shower and our own bed. We spend the next week or so developing/uploading pictures and videos, sorting through clothes clean and dirty, sorting out our souvenirs and tangible memories, putting them away for safe keeping until we look at them again before heading back on the road to camp or a show and starting the cycle anew again.

For Phish fans, it can be difficult to take a ‘real’ vacation, one that involves not going directly to a Phish show and not collecting another Mike’s Groove for the memory bank. Booking a flight, taking off to a Caribbean locale or elsewhere throughout the world and spending a week or more with someone special or a group of friends – all that takes effort and planning in order to pull off and its not easy. The average person can plan that trip to Costa Rica a year in advance but for Phish fans, many cannot simply due to the fact that Phish might be playing a year from now and most of the time, Phish takes priority. Weddings are acceptable reasons to skip Phish, simply because that event doesn’t repeat itself and there are hundreds of more Phish shows; weddings, not so much. So we wait and see when Phish is playing and make plans accordingly. With no fall shows for Phish this year, fans can rest assured that plans can be made and vacations taken with a relative degree of planning involved in order to make the vacation less harried and more enjoyable. Taking away the fear of going on vacation and missing something epic like a hometown show, a three night run or even worse, a festival, allows for trips to be planned and vacations to be enjoyed without the fear of missing out on something special.

Then again, some folks plan in advance and wind up missing out on the few shows that they were set on going to, simply because life (family, significant other, lack of time) got in the way. Having to plan well in advance for a tour knowing that accurate tour dates are a crapshoot until announced adds to the pressure of planning and hoping Phish and ‘real’ vacations don’t overlap. With some luck, you can get in both vacations; you gotta squeeze as much out of a vacation as you can when you know that Phish tour will probably postpone the next one!

Even with family vacations coming up more often as we get older, the need to take a Phamily vacation is ever-present so as to bring us back to where we were, remind us of the feeling we forgot and bridge the gap between the youthful exuberance that Phish tour secretes and the docility aging brings to our lives. It becomes a struggle between getting older and seeking to hold on to the things we grew up with and a balance is needed even when it seems like it might not be in our best interest. Your soul knows best and finding your way back on tour, even if just for a show or four is what you can fit in, you know it will be worth it. It always is. With friends by our side we get back feeling alive from out latest Phish vacation.
