Poll Results: Have you used the following forms of Social Media at a Phish show?

Last week, we asked Phish fans to share if they do or do not use certain forms of social media while at a Phish show. The results of the survey are seen below:

Facebook – adding photo (s) – 44%

Facebook – status update (s) – 42%

Twitter – to find out what song they are/were playing – 35%

Twitter – tweeting just a few times a show – 35%

None – I do not use social media at all at a Phish show – 32%

Twitter – uploading a picture (s) – 28%

Facebook – commenting on status(es) and/or photo(s) – 24%

Twitter – responding to tweets – 20%

Twitter – tweeting a setlist (partial or full) – 18%

Facebook – checked in – 15%

FourSquare – checked in – 11%

Of course, this survey is not scientifically accurate. A small sample size (324 votes) does not indicate that this survey is 100% indicative of any given Phish crowd, but it does provide some insight into the frequency of use of social media at a given Phish show.

The most popular responses were using Facebook to add a photo or update status, something commonly seen by those on Couch Tour. Using Twitter to see what song was being played or tweeting a few times a show had an equal number of responses. Slightly fewer, but more than ¼ of respondents said that they uploaded a picture to Twitter during a show and slightly less than ¼ responded to Tweets or commented on Facebook statuses and photos.

Almost 1/3 noted that they do not use social media at all during a Phish show, which may wind up being a higher number, since social media (Facebook and Twitter) were the main ways in which fans were alerted to the survey, making the survey somewhat slanted towards those who are already using social media. If this survey had been sent out over email, there might be a higher number reporting they do not use social media at a show. Essentially, the outreach for this simple survey was akin to taking a phone survey to ask if people if they use a phone. The answers will of course, be skewed. But as mentioned before, this was not designed as a comprehensive, PEW Research Group/GallupPoll level of surveying.

The least responses came regarding tweeting a partial of full setlist, something that is seen by many on Twitter but as a percent of those at a Phish show, the number is quite low (note: PhanArt tweets a full setlist and still enjoys the show, every single time, just like many others). The least popular responses were checking in, whether on Facebook or FourSquare, something that seems to be done by not as many people in general lately, but still notable and present in the world of social media.

A question was brought up in the phish.net forum regarding message boards as being social media. A short discussion ensued where valid points were made arguing that message boards were or were not a form of social media. While the majority agreed that a message board constitutes social media, the question does arise – Do you go on message boards during a show, especially when there are faster ways of accessing and sharing information with others? The number of those who use message boards in this manner at a Phish show remains to be seen, but is predictably on the lower end of the response scale.

The role of social media is a large one in society and clearly quite present at Phish shows, generating perhaps around 30-33% of fans using a form of social media as defined in this survey, while at a Phish show. If you choose not to use social media, that decision is well respected by many in the Phish community, both on and off line. But if you do use social media, don’t forget to pay attention to the show and live in the moment. It’s awesome when Phish plays Sanity, but five tweets or two statuses explaining how excited you are to hear this song may interrupt actually taking in the song and enjoying it in its live setting.

Surrender to the Flow Magazine launches Kickstarter drive

Surrender to the Flow published their first issue in the Fall of 1998 for Phish tour and has continued to be a staple of tour ever since. From the tours of 1.0, Oysterhead in 2001 and a whopping SIX issues in 2009, totaling 14 issues total in 3.0 and 33 issues over the past 14 years, Surrender to the Flow is the best information you can get on lot, with great articles, stories and info that fans need while on the road.
STTF has grown to publishing 8,000+ copies per tour and is run masterfully by Christy Articola as editor, working with an all volunteer staff made up of members from the Phish community. Christy plans to keep publishing Surrender as long as the band keeps playing!

In an effort to digitize all past copies of Surrender to the Flow, Christy has found a fantastic digital magazine software called 3D Issue. Through a onetime purchase of the software, Surrender to the Flow will be able to feature pdf’s of all issues, including new issues as well. A hosting site is already secured so the next step is raising the money for the cost of 3D Issue.

A Kickstarter campaign has started so that Phish fans can support Surrender to the Flow’s digitizing effort and like with all Kickstarter drives, you can get some great benefits in return!

Three year anniversary of PhanArt: The Art of the Fans of Phish

Three years ago today a party was held in Troy, NY to celebrate the publication of a most unique book, PhanArt: The Art of the Fans of Phish. The night started with a dinner for friends, artists and family before heading next door to Revolution Hall (RIP) for the party. With a semi-brief* intro about the book from the author, The McLovins debuted in New York followed by Long Island’s own The Flow performing two sets of Phish covers.

The night was four and a half years in the making, starting shortly after Coventry. That night we sold 1/5 of the first printing (250) and started what would lead to over $5800 in donations for The Mockingbird Foundation through PhanArt.net. Today PhanArt is donating $500 from the sale of the book and will donate another another $500 with the sale of the final copies of PhanArt. The first edition will not be reprinted, although it is available for sale as an ebook for Kindle, iPad and Nook and soon will be available for the Sony Tablet.

Check out a slideshow of pictures of the book here

The future of PhanArt is bright, with the first printing remaining as an ebook, with all profits from the sale benefiting The Mockingbird Foundation. Later this year, PhanArt: 2009 will feature all the art from the first year of the return of Phish, as well as interviews and articles on the Phish community in the ‘3.0’ era. This edition will be designed by Josh Jacobs, adding graphic design experience to the layout and design of PhanArt. Yearly editions of PhanArtwill be created to compile the art which makes the Phish community so unique.

If you would like to pick up one of the final 5 books, get one here. Thank you all for your continued support of PhanArt and support for ALL the artists who’s creativity went into the book and is featured on the website. PhanArt will continue its mission to compile and preserve art created by Phish fans for the Phish community and in the course of such work, to also benefit The Mockingbird Foundation, raising funds for music education.

Coming soon, there will be a new way to donate to The Mockingbird Foundation through PhanArt. Stay tuned for details

Attention NYC-area fans! Phish fans needed for photo shoot

Cory Schwartz, a Phish fan and photographer is looking for Phish fans in the greater NYC area to take part in a documentary project that he is undertaking through the first half of 2012. What he is seeking to do is to photograph fans in their natural environment, whether it be work or home, capturing what aspects of the band carry on outside of the show. Below, Cory shares his project with fans.

I am currently a student at the International Center of Photography in New York City where I am completing a one-year photojournalism and documentary program. For this program we conclude the year with a long term final project. My final project is about fans and the culture of what makes someone a fan, how they promote and share their love and enthusiasm for something, and of course the special items and memorabilia they collect along the way. There are many things that people are strong fans of, whether it be music, sports, science fiction, Disney, as well as a wide variety of other things that are out there. When I speak of the music fan, this one holds dear to my heart and is why I am calling on you. Music has been a passion for most of my life and has taken me on many journeys throughout. Once such journey is one a lot of us can relate to. It is the Phish journey. It is something that took hold of me back in 97′ and since then and about 75 shows later it is something that is still strong in my life and has had a profound impact on me. This is what I want to tap into, I want to photograph the “Phan”.

The project idea is about the Phan and how they choose to embrace this love for the band. We all have the posters on the wall and the t-shirts from tour after tour, but maybe you are someone who has a whole lot of stuff. Maybe its the room full of posters or the car plastered with bumper stickers. This is not something that is strictly limited to ones house though, this is something that can spill out into everyday life, in the environment that one creates for themselves, maybe this passion spills into the work place and the desk is adorned with trinkets. I want to photograph the Phan in his environment and show how this is a way of living, not something that stops at the last note played at the convert venue.

If you think this is something that you would be interested in investing some time in and allowing me to photograph you I ask that you please email me at coryhschwartz at gmail.com for additional information and we can discuss the project more in depth. My vision is to bring this passion to life in photographs. Thanks for your time and I do look forward to working with some of you.

This project is supported by PhanArt and fans in the greater NYC area are encouraged to get in touch with Cory, helping him to create a visual record of who we are when we aren’t at a Phish show.

You can visit Cory’s website and see some of his pictures of Phish on Flickr.

Update from Cory 1/30 6:50 pm

“I just wanted to say a quick thanks to Pete for his support on this project.   In the short time the message has been out there, the response has already been great, so thank you to all that have begun to reply!  I have received a large amount of emails and I’m beginning to go through them now, please know that I will do my best to get back to everyone and please keep sending them if you wish to be a part of this project.”
