How can you support music education in schools?

With major cuts to education being implemented in state budgets throughout the country, the need to support students is at an all time high. When the ax falls on school budgets, the first to go are typically the arts and music programs. In this day of strained budgets and a heavy emphasis on test-intensive subjects such as science and math, schools in less well-to-do towns and city neighborhoods are often not so lucky. When the time comes for costs to be cut, the arts are seen as expendable — if not frills, then at least not essential to an education that will turn out productive members of America’s economic machinery. The arts and education have been intricately intertwined since the Greeks set up their first schools, with a focus on philosophy, art, mathematics and music, the first three relating to and impacting directly the most important of those, music.

A music education is critical in the development of a well-rounded education and helps to prepare students for life with a greater focus on self-discipline, improved focus and increased ease in learning and synthesizing abstract information. To ignore music is to set our students back in their academic progress and limit their capabilties in future endeavors. Treating music, art and even foreign language as an unnecessary appendage that can be cut as needed lessens the ability for the youth of the nation to develop strong backbones in the academic rigors that are avoidable when the budget ax falls, namely Math, Science, History and English.

The Mockingbird Foundation is a leading grantmaker in music education for children, the Foundation has now made over 300 grants in 47 states. Proceeds are generated through comprehensive books including three editions of The Phish Companion: A Guide to the Band & Their Music, innovative recordings, special art prints, creative donation premiums, and fan community events. At the beginning of Summer 2016, The Foundation announced that Phish fans have donated over one million dollars to charity.

The Mockingbird Foundation is entirely volunteer, with no salaries, paid staff, office space, or endowment — thus distributing all possible funds to education grants. No member or volunteer benefits financially from the Foundation, all proceeds from Mockingbird projects are donated to tax-exempt organizations.

Since 1994, Mockingbird has cultivated intellectual property on Phish and their music through phish.net, making it the leading provider of historical information about the band. It has published three editions of The Phish Companion as well as a Phish cover album,Sharin’ in the Groove. Through strategic partnerships, The Foundation contributes content to a dozen other Phish related site and four mobile apps.

With Board Members, phish.net contributors and volunteers across the country, Mockingbird exists almost exclusively online. Born from a Usenet newsgroup and started as a mailing list, it now sustains via online forums and blogs on phish.net, Facebook and Twitter.

Phish and JEMP Records to release “Japan Relief”: Field of Heaven, Fuji Rock Festival, Japan 7/31/99

From Phish and  JEMP Records:

In response to the recent earthquake and tsunami that the people of the northeastern part of Japan have endured JEMP Records is releasing “7/31/99, Field of Heaven, Fuji Rock Festival, Niigata, JAPAN” as benefit CD at & download at Phish Dry Goods and livephish.com to benefit Peace Winds America http://peacewindsamerica.org. 100% of the funds Peace Winds America collects for disaster relief will go to support operations through their sister organization, Peace Winds Japan. Relief operations began March 15th and are currently underway in Miuyagi Prefecture, where Peace Winds is on the ground providing food, clothing, medicines and temporary shelter to survivors of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.

7/31/99 was recorded by Paul Languedoc and mastered by Fred Kevorkian. We’d like to thank Fred and the folks at Nugs.net and Music Today for donating their efforts to this cause.

The expected release date of the download at livephish.com will be April 15th. The expected ship date of the CD from Phish Dry Goods (drygoods.phish.com) will be May 10th. Click Here to pre-order

About the show:

Immediately following their 1999 U.S. summer tour, Phish traveled abroad for their first ever shows in Japan. Fuji Rock Festival took place on multiple stages and the festival had specially designed the “Field Of Heaven” stage for Phish to play three consecutive nights of complete, two-set headline shows.

This release features Phish’s entire show from July 31, 1999 – the middle, Saturday night as well as “What’s The Use?” from their soundcheck on July 29th. The July 31st show crackled with energy, intermingling classic and new material with an exploratory vibe that meshed with the atmosphere of respect and beauty.

Set one had many high points including standout performances of “My Friend, My Friend”, “Back On The Train”, “Limb By Limb” and “Character Zero”. Set two started in the stratosphere with a “2001” > “David Bowie” opener that proved the most experimental music played at Fuji Rock transposed against the gentle beauty of “Wading In The Velvet Sea”. Set two also featured one of the all-time great renditions of “Prince Caspian”, a smoking “Fluffhead” and mystical “Simple”. The encore provided a chance for friend and fellow musician Nawang Khechog to address the crowd about Tibetan human rights and perform with Fish on vacuum for a meditative jam with Fish and with the whole band on flute for a special “Brian And Robert”. Japan proved a perfect host for Phish, the Field Of Heaven has survived ever since as part of Fuji Rock Festival and Phish has maintained a strong connection with Japan, weaving Japanese lyrics into “The Meatstick” as recently as New Year’s Eve 2010-2011.

In the past, charitable downloads at LivePhish.com have raised over $100,000 for four non-profits: the Harbor House of New Jersey (The Headphones Jam), the New Orleans Musician’s Clinic, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Fund (Katrina Relief) and the American Red Cross (Haiti Relief). Additionally, the Mockingbird Foundation receives funding on an on-going basis from the proceeds at LivePhish.com.

Six Years of PhanArt: The Art of the Fans of Phish!

Today marks 6 years since the start of PhanArt: The Art of the Fans of Phish! Over the past 6 years, we have made every effort to archive and compile the collection of Phish created fan-art (PhanArt) for purposes of historical and cultural preservation, create a book of this art for benefit of Mockingbird Foundation, and developed the PhanArt Blog as a central marketplace for fans, artists and PhanArtists to sell their wares and creations, with a percentage of all sales benefiting Mockingbird Foundation.

These past 6 years have been amazing and continue to get better. It took 4 years to get the PhanArt book to print, and so far we have sold over 430 copies of PhanArt: The Art of the Fans of Phish, featuring 1600 pieces of Phish PhanArt, collected well over 500 new pieces of PhanArt for a second edition of the book to be completed at a later date, and provided the Phish community with an outlet for their creativity when the lots arent open.

Our Mission Statement remains the same: PhanArt’s mission is to compile and preserve art created by Phish fans for the Phish community and, in the course of such work, to also benefit The Mockingbird Foundation, which raises funds for music education for children.

We look forward to seeing all the great art this fall for the New Years run, and ask you to spread the word about PhanArt to your friends and phamily!

Initial analysis indicates that Phish has some sort of grudge against the west coast, and that those 3 Greek shows should hold you over for about 10-11 months. Phish also seems to like being near home, spending 9 out of 15 dates of fall tourin the northeast. This bodes well for people who live in the northeast, as well as the potential for extras, with less college kids from the midwest and south coming to see Phish. But there’s always Umphrey’s McGee and Widespread Panic to hold you over till New Years. It’s not the same, but if you pretend its sometime between 2005-2008 when Phish wasn’t touring, it will feel right. Maybe not completely right, but close.

But yeah, Midwest got hosed on tour dates. What did you guys do?

Some Atlantic City tips – bring condoms. This goes for dudes as well as the ladies. Understand that Atlantic City is a CDC hazard site and you will most likely leave with an STD.  A bachelor party I attended in 2005 netted 5 cases of the Clap alone in one hotel room. Wear these condoms during the show, just to be safe. Rashes and diseases sneak up all over during the stay there. They don’t come out during the day usually, but around 6pm, load up on lots of hand-sanitizer. For your skin, not to drink. The predictable hot lot item? Penicillin. By the bottle. Going rates in early fall tour trading on the PhanArt Stock Exchange show initial projections to be 1 for 3, 2 for 5 (143245) but this could rise as tour heats up. Diseases are attracted to heat. Stay vigilant fans. Also a hot lot item:

nectar of the gods

Mainly in Utica, but don’t be surprised to see it in…. Oh nevermind, it’s only going to be a hot lot item in Utica. And cheap as shit too. Enjoy the deliciousness that is, Utica Club. ANYONE CAN JOIN THE UTICA CLUB! We’ll see you this fall folks! Stay tuned for updates from the road, as well as phan made art for sale here on the PhanArt Blog!

1st ever PhanArt survey results

Recently we created a survey for Phish fans to give us an idea of what the lot scene is like from their point of view, what they buy, what they make, what they want to see, and so on. 123 people responded to this survey over three weeks, giving insight into the buying power and creative forces of Phish fans. Here are the results with analysis of the survey.

Definitions to keep in mind

Fan-art is defined as art that is made by fans and inspired by bands, movies, events, etc…

Phanart – fan-art made specifically by Phishfans, for Phishfans, and/or inspired by Phish

PhanArt: The Art of the Fans of Phish – a book chronicling and archiving Phish fan-art.

The Survey Questions:

1. Have you ever made fan-art

Yes: 47.4%

No: 52.6%

2. What did you make? (Multiple answers allowed)

Shirt – 38.3%

Poster36.2%

Jewelry – 8.5%

Other – 36.2%

Clothing 19.1%

Sticker19.1%

Analysis: Shirts and posters make up over 2/3 of all things people make, which makes sense since that is what we see most of. 1/5 made clothing of some sort, beyond shirts, the same amount as stickers. Are there as many stickers as clothes out there? Perhaps.

3. Did you…..

Make money – 47.8%

Break even – 28.3%

Lose money– 23.9%

Analysis: 75% of respondents made money or broke even, giving fans a 3 in 4 chance of not losing money. This is not indicative of ALL art fans have made or sold, but a good enough judgement that its at least worth getting into making something with a 75% chance (based upon this survey) to NOT lose any money.

4. Would you sell fan-art again?

Yes – 78.3%

No – 21.7%

Analysis: Overwhelming that most fan-art makers attempt to repeat the success they had in the past, especially since 75% of fans made money or broke even, showing correlation between the question 3 and 4.

Reasons given FOR selling fan-art again include:

– Meet cool people

–  Meet people and feel more vibes that day

–  Because i love to and am always so inspired right before tour time.

–  It is a great way to fund your trip and I enjoy making the art itself

–  It’s a ton of fun and I enjoy creating different things related to my favorite band.

–  Because i can get to the next show

–  It’s fun! (multiple responses)

–  I did it more for an activity, and I thought it would be fun to give away stickers…etc

–  Money, meeting people

–  Fun to meet people and get more ideas also

–  Didn’t try to sell it…just made it for myself

Reasons given for NOT selling fan-art again include:

–  Because I dont like making money off of art

–  Mostly I’ve made stuff for fun not money

–  Wasn’t for sale were gifts for friends

A little of both…

–  It’s really more maybe. These day I prefer my tours or shows as vacations and as sales is part of the day job these days, it’s less likely.

5. Have you ever bought fan-art?

Yes – 96%

No – 4%

Analysis: Not much of a surprise, since nearly everyone has bought some sort of fan-art in their day

6. What have you bought? (multiple answers allowed)

Shirt – 91.7%

Poster – 82.3%

Sticker – 78.1%

Jewelry – 35.4%

Other – 49.0%

Analysis: Again, the overwhelming responses indicate Shirts, stickers and posters as the predominant items bought on lot. An average of 84% percent of respondents has bought a shirt poster or sticker. This accurately reflects the 84.6% of items contained within PhanArt: The Art of the Fans of Phish that are shirts, posters/paintings and stickers.

7. How much fan-art do you own?

Blank space where no text should be 1-10 items 11-15 items 16-20 items 21-25 items 26-30 items more than 30 items
stickers 63.3% 12.7% 7.6% 3.8% 0.0% 12.7%
shirts 68.2% 17.6% 5.9% 1.2% 1.2% 5.9%
posters 54.8% 14.3% 9.5% 3.6% 1.2% 16.7%
jewelry, misc, etc… 70.4% 11.1% 3.7% 3.7% 0.0% 11.1%

Analysis: From this chart, we can see that more than half of respondents own at least 1-10 pieces of fan-art. The numbers drop off from there, with only an average of 13% of respondents having more than 11-15 items, 6% of respondents having 16-20 items, and fewer collecting more. This represents the minority of hard-core collectors of fan-art, as encountered in the creation of PhanArt: The Art of the Fans of Phish where a handful of fans had the a significant amount of fan-art to help in the creation of the book that was otherwise lost to time.

8. Do you seek out particular fan-art?

Yes – 56.1%

No – 43.9%

9. Is there anything you haven’t seen on lot that you would like to see?

Yes – 28.4%

No – 71.6%

Comments of those who responded yes:

–  Matted photographs

–  More creative stuff instead of just brand logos turned into phish songs

–  I’ll know it when I see it!

–  A small area where poster artists could display/sell their stuff. Too often I find someone with an awesome print. When I ask where they got it, it’s usually from somebody just walking around

–  More hats

–  Dharma Beer (we support this idea)

–   More creative items

–  Dog leash/collar

–   The “Jesus” fish logo thing, with Phish written inside. I’ve seen them on cars, haven’t been able to find one for myself 🙁

–   Furniture

–   Pretty much anything as long as it’s high quality

10. What are your overall thoughts on the genre of ‘fan-art’? (scale of 1 to 10, 10 being best)

I love all fan-art! very cool kinda cool mildly cool it makes no difference eh, not for me not very heady at all Rating
Average
33.7% 46.9% 11.2% 4.1% 1.0% 2.0% 1.0% 8.31

Analysis: 91.8% of fans responded positively (the first 3 choices), giving fan-art in general an overall rating of 8.31 on a scale of 1 to 10. Not too shabby.

So there you have it, the first ever Phish fan-art survey. Look for more of these in the future as we delve deeper into one of the mosdt unique and growing genres of art in America today.
