The Soulshine Poster Art Show at Summercamp

The Soulshine Poster Art Show is an exhibition of artisans who create
handmade concert posters utilizing the time-honored process of fine art
printmaking.

The event is hosted in eulogy to Lisa Rosemann artist, live music
devotee and spirit of our community – who left us to paint her greatest
masterpiece this May.

Visit the Soulshine Tent Fri-Sun 10am-4pm to learn more about the art of printmaking and return home with a valuable collectible. View a special exhibition of The Art of Lisa Rosemann and bid on posters autographed by many of the musicians performing at this year’s 2010 Summer Camp Music Festival with proceeds benefitting charity.

AJ Masthay’s Fantastic Hullaballo Print for NOLA Jazz Fest

From PhanArtist AJ Masthay: Hello and happy spring from Masthay Studios! The weather here in Connecticut has been absolutely spectacular over the past few days, everything is finally turning green and the flowers are blooming. I love Spring, although it makes it really difficult to hunker down in the studio…

I’m writing to let you know about an exciting event that Ill be taking part in at the end of the month. FANTASTIC HULLABALOO is two nights of music and arts taking place in the Big Easy during Jazz Fest.

Along with myself, additional artists on display will include Stanley Mouse, Jeff Wood, Scramble Campbell, Isadora Bullock, Ian Millard, and many more. A big thanks to Tripp at Taboot Art for putting the whole event together. Details including dates, times, bands, and a full artist lost can be found at www.fantastichullabaloo.com

I’ve also created a new edition of 100 prints that will be released at the event. Each is a 7 seven color linoleum block print on 13″ x 23″ Stonehenge paper stock.

Finally, I hope everyone has a great summer tour. Im already well into my first edition for it and plan at least a few new pieces to be released in the next few months.

Two New Posters from AJ Masthay

Happy St. Patties Day from Masthay Studios!

In celebration I’m releasing two editions today, one that goes very well with today’s festivities, the other – not so much, but still fun.

I have a very small allotment of prints form the March 12-14th Umphrey’s McGee run at First Avenue in Minneapolis, MN. Obviously this is the one that is in the St. Patricks Day spirit.

UM FirstAve

The second is an art print that I am very excited about, FUGU ME! This print is part of an artist collaboration for the upcoming book PhanFood: From the Parking Lot to the Kitchen Pot, an upcoming cookbook made by Phish fans, for Phish fans. Taraleigh Silberberg and Pete Mason started the project last summer and have the cookbook set to come out this fall, with all net profits benefiting food banks and food pantries in the cities Phish visits each tour. Aprons of this design will be available with the book upon its release. Stay tuned to phanfood.com for more info.

Happy New Year from Masthay Studios!

We’re back from Miami and had a fantastic time soaking up the sun and catching some fantastic concerts. Mock Show was a huge success thanks to the hard work of people like Jason Kaczorowski, Jamie Huntsman, and the numerous artists and volunteers involved. Thank you to all!

I was also the proud recipient of two “Golden Tubes” at the first ever Posties Awards. My Miami Heat piece took the “best NYE print” category and I also won the “best Mock Show” category. Congrats to all the other postie winners and thank you to all that voted for my work.

After some sorting, I have a very limited number of prints from 6 editions that will be available on my site this Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 12 Noon EST.

Included editions are Miami Heat NYE, Mock Show Flamingo, Mock Show Epidemic, the MSG Atlas, Albany Terror Gnome and finally my official print for the December 30th Umphrey’s McGee show at the Aragon.

Please feel free to contact me at aj@masthaystudios with any questions. Hope you have a joyous, prosperous and safe 2010.

The 5th Phish poster convention and 2nd Mock Show will be held December 30th from 10am-3pm at EPIC HOTEL in Miami, Florida. As with other conventions, dozens of artists and exhibitors will be on hand displaying some unique prints both old and new, as well as donate to great fan-based charities.

Having attended the first two conventions as a fan and taken part in the last two as a charitable organization (as PhanArt nets profits for Mockingbird Foundation through sales of PhanArt and other lot art), I have to say these are MUST SEE and MUST ATTEND events for even the casual observer of lot art.  Some AMAZING art is found here. The Poster show in Miami on 12/30/03 was the show that got me hooked on the lot art, and it’s been a great ride ever since.  In fact, it’s fair to say that these poster-conventions were the early catalyst for PhanArt: The Art of the Fans of Phish!

Of the artists listed above, there are several official Phish artists including Jim Pollock, David Welker, Jeff Wood, Justin Helton and Sei Rey Ho of Us & Them Studio.  This is Ho’s and Wood’s first Mock Shows, joining a crop of artists who have taken part in many, if not all poster shows dating back to 1/3/03 in Hampton, VA.

PhanArtists such as Ryan Kerrigan, Tripp, AJ Masthay, Isadora Bullock, Fred Hosman of HoscoPress, Bruce Horan, Erin Cadigan, Uncle & Aunt Ebeneezer, Noah Phence, Ryan Jerzy, Jamie Huntsman, Vince Naro, and Franky Scaglione will have their art on display, as will Michael Ortiz & Jon Lamb of LikeMindedProductions, Ian Millard and Drew Findley of Subject Matter Studios. Mock Show creator and PhanArtist Jason Kaczorowski will be showcasing his concert/festival and celebrity portrait photography in a special exhibition.

Included amongst the artists are non-profit organizations Waterwheel Foundation, Mockingbird Foundation, PhanArt (thats us!) and the main beneficiary from the event, Headcount. Headcount will be sponsoring an exciting opportunity for patrons to engage themselves in the democratic process of voting by helping stage a juried art event wherein patrons will receive ballots upon entry (and previously online) to “vote” for the their artists spanning various categories including “Best of Show”, “Best New Artist”, “Best Mock Show Poster” among others.

These votes will be tallied and awards will be presented during a catered VIP banquet ceremony Thursday, December 31st, 2009 from Noon-4pm. The awards ceremony will feature an additional surprise roster of artists exhibiting in a currently undisclosed location. Check back November 30th when tickets go on sale to learn how you can be one of only 100 special VIP guests to attend this inaugural awards ceremony dubbed “The Posties” where the coveted “Golden Tubes” will be distributed to artists voted best in their field. You’ll have a unique opportunity to talk candidly with artists, browse an exclusive collection of fine art on display, attend the afternoon’s inaugural “Posties” ceremony all while enjoying a premium open bar and delicious hors d’oeuvres. More information at on the Mock Show website starting Monday, November 30th, 2009 when tickets go on sale.

AJ Masthay Albany print – ‘Terror Gnome’

With fall tour comes yet another Amazing AJ Masthay print!

The first of a few prints he is releasing for this tour is “The Arena”.  Although you could call it The Times Union Center, The Pepsi Arena, or everyone’s favorite, the original, The Knick(erbocker) Arena. For this poster, just for brevity’s sake, AJ sticks “The Arena”

With 8 colors total, this is a poster with a smaller edition of 75. The ink on these is extra thick, so it looks like that super shiny, raised off the paper, stink that runs up your nostrils thick. Good stuff.

Masthay is looking to convey a sense of autumn, hence the wooded path. This poster more than others in his collection tells a story, but what is happening in the story is up to your imagination.  What is the book in the gnome’s hands? The HPB? PhanArt? Dianetics? ? Is he walking towards you or away from you? Is he being chased? These questions are best pondered and answered by picking up the poster.  Order info below.

These prints will be onsale at 12 Noon EST, Tuesday, November 17, 2009. Prints are limited to 2 per person.  you can pick them up at www.masthaystudios.com

AJ has at least one more edition that he will be releasing before the tour starts. Keep an eye out for another announcement shortly. Feel free to contact AJ at aj@masthaystudios with any questions.
