42 Degrees Art Gallery in Glens Falls features PhanArt and PhanArtists!

Not all galleries are the same.

In fact, you find very few that are much alike. While they all adhere to the same purpose (to display – and usually sell – pieces of art), each conveys its goal in very different ways.

One of the area’s more unconventional galleries is 42 Degrees, a new space that recently opened in downtown Glens Falls. Just a stone’s throw away from the city’s hospital, 42 Degrees specializes in Phan-Art – a form of art made famous by the band Phish that is used as promotion for concerts, musical events and pop culture.

“We really would like to go in that direction,” co-owner Mike Chowske said.

While many of the artists in the shop are local, the Phan-Art artists are drawn from throughout the country with the help of Albany-based author Pete Mason.

“(Mason) put out a book on Phan-Art, and we got in touch with the artists through him,” said co-owner Jon King.

The shop’s Phan-Art designers come from diverse locales, including Hartford, Conn., and Berkeley, Calif.

Editorial on the Naked guy from Surrender to the Flow

This editorial was first published in the Miami edition of Surrender to the Flow, the Phish Fanzine. We at PhanArt agree with this editorial so much that we had to publish it, in its entirety, with permission from the editor, Christy Articola. (all emphasis added)

Naked Dude by Drew Suto (thumb not accurate to naked guy's 'scale')

I was at Charlottesville when The Naked Guy jumped on stage.  While the crowd roared with laughter as he eluded security for nearly thirty seconds, and while the band watched, dumbstruck, I have to admit, I too let a giggle escape… for a second.  Quickly, however, my laughter turned to disdain.

Who does this guy think he is?

Okay, okay.  Maybe I’m a party pooper– but randoms jumping on stage stopped being funny the night Dimebag Darrell got killed on stage.  It’s not funny.  It’s scary. Imagine if YOU were Trey and some naked, possibly spun out, likely drunk guy lunges at you out of the blue?

I friggin love Phish.  You people know this, clearly.  I’m not knocking them for taking this fan antic and turning it into something funny and unique.  But I can only hope (and beg, and pray) that when Trey threw “Run like a naked guy out of control” into the lyrics that nobody got any ideas.  Sure, it was a fun Antelope, due to the alternate lyrics.  We all got a kick out of it.  But PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, people… do NOT get naked and jump on stage.  Don’t jump on stage clothed, either.  JUST DON’T JUMP ON STAGE.  JUST DON’T DO IT.  DON’T try to get famous at a Phish show. Don’t you realize the repercussions of actions like this?  Tighter security.  Interrupted jams.  A general feeling of uncomfortableness from the band.  These are things we do NOT want at Phish shows, people.

I’ve always called Trey out for saying “Keep doing that– it looks cool!” during the first-ever glowstick war at The Great Went.  Yes, glowstick wars look cool.  I agree.  But this comment– and this comment alone– spawned years of all of us being hit in the head with glowsticks, and years of the band having to dodge flying glowsticks during some seriously sick Phish moments.  It’s finally subsided.  Glowstick wars are actually kind of great these days— BECAUSE PEOPLE FINALLY KNOW BETTER THAN TO THROW THEM AT THE BAND-  but it took years.

DON’T let this event in Charlottesville become a regular feature of Phish shows.  If you see someone attempting to run on stage, stop them.  IT’S NOT COOL.  This should not continue. This should be a one time thing.  The band may think its funny…. now.  But they won’t when it starts happening every show.  Sure– this was the first time it happened since “I saw Carini and the naked man” way back in Madison on 11/6/98, but hopefully it’ll be at LEAST eleven more years before we have to see these kinds of antics at a show again.

Please.  I’m begging.

Strong Argument in favor of Phish Concert Webcasts

While we here at PhanArt do not cast judgement upon posts of this nature, we can’t help but admit that this is a well thought out idea. Phish Inc., take note.

We Need a High-Quality Paid Webcast for Phish Concerts

(Originally posted at Livemusicblog.com on October 23rd, 2009)

After witnessing the evolving and ever-expanding online activity surrounding Phish’s recent reunion tour, I’m now thoroughly convinced that the Phish fan base is primed and ready for a high-quality and paid live video stream for the band’s next tour. If done properly and in innovative Phish fashion, it could create an untapped revenue stream for the band while allowing more Phish fans to engage with the band’s music – in particular those fans that can’t make it out to every show on tour.

Given the band’s recent history of wanting to scale down their in-house operations, I could see why you might think that a large-scale paid webcast would not be worth the large investment and effort it most certainly would require. But it’d be wrong to think so. There are some very compelling reasons why this should happen now and why Phish is the band to do it.

Phish, Red Light Management, please hear us out. We’ve really thought this one through…

Phish Fans Are Primed, Hungry and Creating Their Own Options
The key here is that this new viewing option would serve the fans who are not at the show, but who are just as engaged in the online coverage and setlist updates happening around the show.

The Precedent Has Already Been Set…By Phish!

Some folks out there may have missed or just forgotten the Summer of 2004 (I wouldn’t blame you if you did or if you wanted to). While I remember some great shows from Alpine Valley, I also vividly remember heading out to some random Cineplex in the Northern Burbs of Chicago to attend a Phish Simulcast from the band’s Brooklyn show at Keyspan Park. If Phish can get a bunch of random heads to congregate into shitty suburban multiplexes at $15-20/head (price?), you’d think it’d be pretty easy to amass a much larger audience online.

An Untapped Market and An Evolving Fan Base

We all know the band has an enormous and insatiable fan following, with fans willing to travel the ends of the earth to see this band live. But what about the hordes of fans who DON’T get to every show? I had friends who hit every show on the West Coast this summer, but for various (and obvious) reasons, they didn’t hit any of the shows on the East Coast. Not just that, but what about fans who have kids or demanding jobs and can’t really pull off going to a show on a random Tuesday these days? Let’s face it, Phish’s fans have gotten older. And more and more, there will be fans that can no longer consistently go on the road for entire tours or even do multi-night runs of shows. Not only that, but what about the fans who simply aren’t able to afford or obtain tickets to a sold out show?

Webcasts Could Be Bigger, Better and More Scalable

Simulcasts are so web 1.0…brah. The cinematic simulcasts were cool and all, but an online stream could potentially be so much better (more on this below). More importantly, the simulcasts were limited. They were only available in certain theaters, to a limited number of fans, and only so many fans were willing to make the trek to the local Cineplex.

Watch Phish Live From Your Living Room

If fans are willing to congregate at their local cineplexes to pay for a concert webcast in a movie theater, putting that stream into their homes should really be the next logical step. Once you give these fans an high-quality option to watch a show from the comfort of their own homes, the possibilities expand dramatically. Just imagine the potential for “webcast viewing parties!” Hell, the band could play into it by running a contest to encourage and sponsor viewing parties throughout the country.

Include Social Media to Bring the Online and In-Venue Worlds One Step Closer

Of course, in this day and age of social media this and twitter that, you’ve got to integrate some social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, so fans can easily link to their status updates and spread the streaming links/commentary out to the rest of the web. At this point, that’s probably a bit of a no-brainer. But how it could play out during the show makes it a bit more interesting. This is because it creates two distinct audiences watching the show, with everyone having the ability to update their social net statuses in real-time, while watching the concert. While much of this is activity is already taking place, adding the webcast in the mix exponentially expands the audience that’s commenting while they’re actually watching the show.

So…Mr. Capshaw, Mr. Coulton, Trey, Mike, Page, Fish, and everyone else in the current Phish organization, what do you think? Can we make this happen?

Warmest Regards,

Sir Marcus Whitperson, Esq.
Lead Webcast Evangelationist

Indoor Lot at the OnCenter Before 11/22 Syracuse Show – Free for Vendors and Phans!

syracuse-orange-mascotOtto Owns Phish Lot, rumored to sit in with Phish

Some very intelligent folks who rune the OnCenter Complex in Syracuse have come up with a great idea: an indoor lot scene that is free for phans to take part in, selling their lot goods inside, away from the cold Syracuse winter (it comes early, trust me)

Inside the OnCenter from 9am-730pm will be vendors such as SoundGarden (Cuse’s own great record store), Henna tattoo Artists, Massage Therapist, Tarot Card readers, (beer) Belly Dancers (10 heady points if you know that song reference) and many book vendors.

Fans can vend too!  This is your pre-show too!  It is FREE for you to take part! So if you have something to sell, whether it be clothing, art, or something else. PhanArt will be there selling the book, shirts, stickers and posters, as well as displaying some of the latest fan-art from 8! To register, all you need is to contact Michelle at the OnCenter at 315-435-8000 to register and you are in! No Cost! No Fee! No Fee? Maybe a Fee during the Phish show, that would be heady. Been since 7/29/03 since I caught one.

But I digress…..

Phish fans can come to the OnCenter, check out the scene inside, and listen to some local bands, including The Lost Marbles, Soul Risin‘, and Dark Hollow (on stage from 2-6pm – this will be an AWESOME pre-show)

It’s gonna be cold, cold, cold, cold in the ‘cuse, so take advantage of this indoor, warm environment to sell your wares and make some money for tour!

Note: Glass vendors- sorry, no dice on this. I checked with them and they just aren’t cool like that. Sorry, but they just wouldn’t say yes.

Beyond the glass thing, this is a PhanArt Recommended, PhanArt Approved event! (PRPA)
